Christian belief: Jesus is God in the flesh or human form,
also called the Son of God.
Fitzgerald alludes to the above belief and the following
scripture:
Luke 2: 46-48 The next day they found him in the Temple
seated among the teachers, listening to them and asking
questions. The teachers were all quite taken with him,
impressed with the sharpness of his answers. But his
parents were not impressed; they were upset and hurt.
His mother said, "Young man, why have you done this to
us? Your father and I have been half out of our minds looking
for you."
49-50 He said, "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you
know that I had to be here, dealing with the things of my
Father [my Father’s business]?" But they had no idea what
he was talking about.
On the back of the text you talked to, use the evidence you
found to illustrate the ideas you came up with. Draw p. 98 on
one side and p.111 on the other side.

Respond to this excerpt:
The American Dream lures people from all over the
world, and it’s because of this possibility: If you come
here and work hard, your kids will have a better life
than you. What if that weren’t true anymore? Record
debt, persistent joblessness, millions of underwater
mortgages and a stock market that hasn’t gone
anywhere in 10 years: For today’s kids who are
entering the job market, it’s hardly a recipe for future
success.
• What does this mean? What is the “American
Dream”? Do you think it’s attainable today? Is
it different from Gatsby’s lifetime?

• Revisit the idea of Dr. T.J.
Eckleburg being a symbol (159160).
• Discuss George’s actions at the
end of the chapter.
* Be prepared to share examples from
