District Mission: Ensuring students achieve their greatest potential! “Kids Come First at Frank” www.perrysburgschools.net/buildings/frank Principal: Dr. Chad Warnimont cwarnimont@perrysburgschools.net Counselor: Ms. Maggie Collins mcollins@perrysburgschools.net 419-874-8721 Principal’s Message February will quickly show up in our rearview mirror . . . March is now before us. We have some exciting events planned for March. Please look for specific information to be sent regarding our FPC Frank Family Fun Festival (which will be held on March 11) and our Frank Arts Festival (which will be held on March 16). Please make sure to make transportation arrangements prior to the start of the school day. Please refer to the School Handbook, page 12, section K. A helpful suggestion would be to create a monthly calendar of how your student is going home each day, i.e. car rider, bus, other. Lunch money, required homework assignments, transportation plans, etc., should be finalized before leaving home in the morning. If you have specific questions, concerns or simply want to share your insights, please do not hesitate to contact our school. Our goal is to improve daily which can only happen with your support, confidence and wisdom. Frank Arts Festival Mark your calendars! The kindergarten, second grade, and fourth grade students as well as our fifth grade orchestra are preparing to perform in the Spring Frank Arts Festival! The Arts Festival is scheduled for Wednesday, March 16th, from 6:15pm-8:30pm. We will utilize the following performance schedule: 6:15pm – Kindergarten 6:45pm – Second Grade 7:20pm – Fourth Grade 8:00pm – Fifth Grade Orchestra Classroom Assignments for 2016-2017 Throughout the next few months, we will begin the process of planning for next year. This includes assessing our master schedule, the effectiveness of our curricular programs, establishing our staffing needs, and of course, selecting a new teacher for your child. Initially, your child’s current teacher will review his/her class list. During this stage, your child’s teacher will indicate the academic and behavioral needs of individual students and indicate which students do not interact well with each other. Next, the teachers, Ms. Collins, and I will meet to begin creating class lists for 2016-2017. As in the past, parent requests for specific teachers will not be honored. Please do not put unnecessary pressure upon your child’s teacher to place your child in a specific classroom. However, if you have information about your child that would assist us in making the appropriate teacher/student assignment, please send that information in a letter to Dr. W so that the team can take it into consideration. Parent letters with specific information that may help place a child in the most appropriate academic setting need to be submitted to Dr. W no later than Thursday, March 24, 2015. Parent letters will not be accepted after this date. Class balance is extremely important for the success of all our students. Rosters are composed with consideration to each individual’s learning style, peer relationships, gender ratio, disciplinary concerns, and the academic needs of all our students. We appreciate you placing trust in the professionals who work with your children on a daily basis. Got Grit?! Recently, our country prepared for one of the biggest sport (and commercial) spectaculars, the Super Bowl. This was a great opportunity to remind our children about all the grit is takes to be successful at the highest levels of professional sports. The NFL's Super Bowl popularity has grown exponentially in the past several years. While the winning team is always memorialized, the public can also relate to the human interest stories about individual athletes that are shared. Often highlighted are the years of commitment to a life long goal and dream demonstrated by sacrifice and countless hours of practice in perseverance. "It’s a practice that you try to do something that you can’t yet do. So challenges exceed current skill” (Duckworth, 2016). These stories teach us about overcoming injuries, mistakes and disappointments, and being cut from a team before rebounding back through hard work and commitment to become the best in the business at their position. While the Seattle Seahawks were not in this year's Super Bowl 50, they have celebrated incredible success the past several years. Even grit psychologist, Angela Duckworth, has been impressed with how the Seahawks’ rise to the top has been centered around Coach Pete Carroll's grit mindset culture and attitude about success. ESPN's article about this meeting is a great read and worth your time (http://goo.gl/2WMl47). When thinking about the Super Bowl, be sure to have conversations with your children about the long journey these individuals and teams have gone on to get to this point in their career. Each one of these athletes have failed on many occasions and because they did- they will have the opportunity of a lifetime, in front of millions of people, to play they game they love. February Grit Challenge for Home: Read and discuss one of these recommended books for children about developing a positive attitude. They give examples of how we can change our outlook and attitudes about negative situations and life events into something much more positive. (1) “The Energy Bus for Kids: A Story About Staying Positive and Overcoming Challenges”, by Jon Gordon (recommended for children 4 yrs and up) (2) “A+ Attitude”, by Stephanie Perry Moore (recommended for children 8 yrs and up) (3) “What to Do When You Grumble Too Much”, by Dawn Huebner (recommended for children 8 yrs and up) (Written by Jamie Hollinger, 2016.) Frank Elementary GRIT Day – February 29 Our first ever Frank Elementary GRIT Day will be on Monday, February 29! Mrs. Alcroft recently presented at a staff meeting on creativity and how we can use creativity in the classroom to help our students develop GRIT. We are so excited about our first GRIT Day coming up on February 29! On this day, our teachers will address the content standards, but approach them differently using creativity to create learning situations where students must demonstrate perseverance, tenacity, and determination. Then we will ask our students for feedback on the lessons. Lastly, we will think about how it felt as a teacher to try creativity as means to develop GRIT in our students. Bullying Prevention Cyberbullying takes place using electronic technology and includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and online video games as well as social media sites. Parents and kids can help prevent cyberbullying by establishing rules and exploring safe ways to use technology. Here are some helpful tips: 1 – Tell your kids that you may review their online communications if you think there is a reason for concern. Have a sense of what they do online and in texts. 2 – Ask for their passwords, but assure them you will only use them in case of emergency. 3 – Establish rules about appropriate use of computers, cell phones, and other technology. For example, be clear about what sites they can visit and what they are permitted to do when they are online. 4 – Help them be smart about what they say or post through texting or online. Tell them not to share anything that could hurt or embarrass themselves or others. Once something is posted, it is out of their control whether someone else will forward or share it. 5 – Tell kids to keep their passwords safe and not share them with friends. 6 – Ask to “friend” or “follow” your kids on social media sites or ask another trusted adult to do so. For more resources and information on bullying prevention, please check out the following website: http://www.stopbullying.gov *Check out the free app – KnowBullying – from SAMHSA that can help prevent bullying. Did You Know? Research shows that parents and caregivers who spend at least 15 minutes a day talking with their child can build the strong foundation for a strong relationship and help prevent bullying. The time you spend will help boost your children’s confidence and build effective strategies for facing bullying – whether children are bullied, engaging in bullying, or witnessing bullying. Take a few minutes and “check-in” by asking about school, their friends, and any challenges they face. (Bullying information written by Woodland Elementary, 2016). Lost and Found Any items in the lost and found that are not claimed by February 29, 2016 will be donated to a local church/charity. Please be sure to check the lost and found for any lost items. We have quite an inventory of lost items. We want these items to be returned to the original owners, however, if this is not possible, we will donate them. Thanks for your understanding! Book Reviews On the morning announcements, there are book reviews of popular children’s books. So far, we have done book reviews on popular books such as Freebird, The Best Friend Battle, and I Love My Hat. If your child reads a great book and would like to write a book review, we would be happy to have your child read the book review on the AM announcements. Please consider having your children participate in this activity. It is a good way for children to have fun in a safe environment while learning a good sport. Blood Drive Planned The American Red Cross will be holding a "Pint-Size Heroes" blood drive here at Frank Elementary School on Tuesday, March 1st, from 4:00pm-9:00pm. A representative came to our school on Tuesday, February 9, to talk to our students about the importance of donating blood and encouraged them to recruit parents to donate. In addition to the wonderful gift of blood donation, we will need parent volunteers to make this event a success. There are activities you can help with at your convenience prior to the blood drive, such as scheduling, addressing reminder cards, and making phone calls. We also need volunteers present the evening of the blood drive to help as greeters, canteen, clean-up, etc. Please reserve some time on March 1st to help us out. 2016-2017 School Calendar The Perrysburg Board of Education has recently adopted the 2016-2017 School Calendar for Perrysburg Schools. Major Ramp Closures in Perrysburg this Summer In the interest of public safety, Perrysburg Schools would like to share the following information with all members of our community. The Ohio Department of Transportation’s I-75 widening project will reconfigure and rebuild the I-75/475 interchange in Perrysburg. This work will begin as early as May or as late as July and the work will take 120 days. This means that two of the interchange ramps will be closed for this time period and they will move all lanes of southbound I-75 traffic to the current northbound lanes just south of US 20. Detour maps are posted at the following link, where you may also sign up for email updates on this project: http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D02/Pages/I-75-I-475interchange-Perrysburg.aspx FPC News Hi Frank families!
