Introduction

The Cask Of Amontillado written by Edgar Allan Poe is a story
takes place in a carnival in Italy where Montresor is planning a
revenge on Fortunato who humiliated him in a very painful way.
Nevertheless the hate and anger to Fortunato was so big that
Montresor lost his conscience and soon he did horrible acts. The
characters are more static but Montresor showed “two faces” in
order to convince Fortunato. The imagery is not the biggest
element as in other Poe´s story and the symbolism and tone get
linked by the classic arrogant Italian who has power and people
deep inside want to see them pay for what they´ve done.
Thesis Statement
T.S. The resentment of a person can make him
manipulate others to take his own revenge and
twisted justice.
First Element: Character´s Personalities
Montresor: He's a very resentful person and he's very jealous of
the achievements of others for example: Montrersor… "Come," I
said, with decision, "we will go back; your health is precious. You are
rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was. You
are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back; you
will be ill, and I cannot be responsible. Besides, there is Luchresi --"
First Element: Character´s Personalities
Fortunato: Is a very arrogant person that thinks knows everything
like his opinion about Luchresi, Fortunato… "Let us go, nevertheless.
The cold is merely nothing. Amontillado! You have been imposed
upon. And as for Luchresi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from
Amontillado." Even Montresor at the begging saw the opportunity
to attack from his best weakness arrogance.
Second Element: Figurative Language
After Montresor found Fortunato drunk he convinced him to come to his house to
the catacombs. He told him that he bought a great wine "Amontillado in a Barrel",
which was intriguing for Fortunato because he was a wine knower and he had many
curiosity to prove that his friend was wrong.
Montresor feed with hate told him the wine was in a part and handcuff him.
Fortunato was so confused he didn't do anything. Soon Montresor started building a
wall and with the time Fortunato told him it was a great joke and they needed to go,
the scary part was the moment Fortunato realized it wasn't a joke and that he would
die and stop screaming.
This story has many interesting purposes for example it teaches you that you need
to respect your friends and you don’t have to make the huge mistake of not having the
“feet on the ground” and interfering in the feeling and the reputation of others.
Conclusion

Montresor illustrated the picture of how the
repression of something you lived can affect your
acts and produce in people a thirst for revenge. This
story can be compared to realities that people live
daily and it can be define as a classic story with a
huge part to learn. The reader can understand the
human nature of each character and apply it to
their own lives in order to have a personal growth.
