And the
Monohybrid Stone
The world of Harry Potter is full of strange and unusual creatures. Hagrid teaches the course Care of Magical
Creatures. Help Harry, Hermione, and Ron solve the following single trait monohybrid crosses for Hagrid’s
class. Be sure to follow all five steps and answer any questions.
1. Blast-ended skrewts are normally covered in spikes. There are very
rare smooth skrewts that are the result of the recessive form. Ron
wants to make a bunch of smooth skrewts so he crosses two
heterozygous spiked skrewts. Will Hagrid be able to create a smooth
skrewt?
2. Nifflers are quick small lizards with an affinity for gold. Harry must breed a fast niffler so he crosses a
pure slow niffler with a heterozygous slow niffler. What are the ratios? Can Harry get a fast niffler?
3. Fang is Hagrid’s boarhound. He is pure for black fur. He wants to have a bunch of spotted pups so he
mates with a pure spotted boarhound. Show the offspring ratios.
4. Hermione got stuck breeding flobberworms. She crosses two heterozygous slimy flobberworms.
(dry is recessive.)
5. Hagrid wants to create a family for Fluffy, his “pet” Cerberus. Fluffy is dominant for three heads and he
will be crossed with a female who is dominant for the much rarer condition of four heads. Show the
ratios for Fluffy’s offspring.
