“Miss Brill” Paragraph

Escher 2015 lescher@sd42.ca

As grade 11s, you should be able to read short stories and point out symbolism and themes. This is a skill you would have begun using and honing in grade 9 and especially grade 10. This year, you’ll be writing many paragraphs (and then essays) on theme, irony, and more.

The short story questions for Miss Brill should have prepped you for this writing assignment. There was a question that asked you to explain some specific symbols in the story, and how those symbols related to a theme.

Paragraph Topic:

Write a paragraph, with a clear topic sentence / thesis, about a particular symbol in the story and its significance to one of the story’s themes. Use the story for reference if necessary. If you quote something, remember to cite it properly: “This is a direct quote” (Miss Brill, 37).
