Recommendations/Comments Specific to Question #10
Response
Instructional technology professors should discuss more about different ways to
incorporate technology into every day instruction, not just for student projects and
assignments.
Do more with less technology meaning using overheads or show more websites that could
be used without a smartboard. Also explain more what is in the library and how to use it.
A brief run-down of all possibilities of technologies within school districts nation wide would
be beneficial.
Give students a course on integrating technology using smart boards and other technology.
Provide students with websites and show them how to use them in the classroom.
I felt prepared to use the technology in my student teaching placements. However, I did not
have the ability to incorporate technology into my lessons much becuase it was not readily
available. I think that Kutztown needs to make the technology to check out available in
Beekey so that when we are there for practicum, we can check out the technology we need
in the same building. Usually, I did not have time to go to the library to check out
technology.
I think more hands on activities with the smart boards in the classrooms would help a lot.
My teacher in my first placement knew a lot about technology and taught me how to use
the Promethean board efficiently!
Discuss the variety of technologies school districts might have. Have students prepare
projects or present a project using types of technologies instead of stand and deliver
Making it mandatory that there be an Elementary Education course in the Professional
Semester that takes students to the library to show them the resources that are available. I
only had one course my entire 4 years as an elementary major that took me to the library,
and that was only to show me children's literature.
Have more technology classes. I think there should be a computer class on Macs and then
another computer class on PCs. I had two technology classes but they were both in Mac
labs. I want to learn how to use technology on Windows.
I think it would be great for Kutztown to have teacher candidates actually teach their
classmates a lesson that integrates technology.
A technology class that demonstrates activities that can be done with a smart board and/or
promethean board(promethenplanet.com)- and even practice writing on one
I felt well-prepared for using the technologies that I had to work with, but if I would have
had a promethean board or smart podiums I wouldn't have known how to use them at all.
Also, I have never heard of a classroom responce system.
Great job, especially from ITC 321!
Students should be exposed to all of the current technologies available to the university in
better preparation for the classroom.
I think our current ITC 321 program, especially the sections taught by Professor William
Jefferson, are an excellent preparatory course for integrating technology in the classroom.
The only recommendation I have is to add content regarding the use of Smartboards and
Promethean boards so that we can take full advantage of these resources once we are
working in actual classrooms.
Teach us how to use the SmartBoards, teach us different ways to integrate it when the
district we are placed in has very restricted access to technology
If the professors were to use the technologies in the classroom, and allow teacher
candidates to work with it more often, I feel that teacher candidates would be better
prepared. From my experience during student teaching, I have used and integrated
technology in two main formats. Both were everyday occurrences. Teacher candidates
should have experience working with both high/modern technology, but older technology
as well, such as an overhead projector, and a simple projector.
Don't put so much pressure on using technology.
They prepared us well but the technology is not easily accessible at certain placements.
They want us to use it but it is sometimes extremely time consuming and tough to reserve.
I think we need more classes on technology especially in the art dept. so that we can learn
all the things smart boards and other programs can do because I really did not know much
about them before coming to my second placement.
What do we do when the technology is not available?
Perhaps have classes where you can learn more about the promethean boards. I had a
computer class but we learned about powerpoints and activinspire. We didn't have any
training in smartboards or promethean boards.
Just allow us to explore different kind of technology because the only exposure we really
had were the smartboards.
I think the faculty at Kutztown could better prepare teacher candidates by going through
the Smartboard and showing the students how to use it and then have them create their
own lesson sometime using the Smartboard to help them become more comfortable with it.
Many school districts have Smartboards now so the knowledge of knowing how to use it
would be beneficial. I was aware of the Smartboard and how to use certain features but
some things I was unsure of or unaware.
I definitely think there should be a class or even a whole week of lessons based around
learning how to use the smart board for many lessons. I have gone to school where a smart
board IS available but even the faculty doesnt know how to use the smart board. I believe if
a student teacher is able to come in and not only use the smart board but teach the faculty
how to use it, that would be amazing for all students even after the student teacher leaves.
I think teachers should be using technology to teach us. I used the computer myself to show
students things on the projector and to show videos and what not. I did not feel prepared at
all to use the smart board. There was not a smart board available to me though, but if there
was i have no idea how to use it!
Use the Smart Boards and technology as much as possible. Give us websites that have
interactive games and activities to do whole group, or individually.
More information about the different programs.
Have a Professional Semester class on integrating technology or offer more seminars on
classroom technology.
When I was going through I took a technology course as part of my requirements but I took
that course my Freshman or Sophomore year so by the time I go to Pro-Sem and Student
Teaching I didn't remember much of what I learned. It would have been nice to have a quick
refresher of different technology that could be used in the classroom, especially using the
smart boards.
More ways to use technology with younger children when they only access they have to
technology is in the computer lab.
It needs to have more of a presence within the expectations leading up to student teaching.
I can only think of one class where we actually used the smart board. I would say for the
professors themselves to incorporate the technology available into their lesson plan. All of
the cool gadgets and neat things you can do with a smart board I learned at my first
placement.
Its hard to when schools do not have the normal technology. Help come up with ways to
integrate technology when there is no smart board or computers to use
Teach us about the different types of technology like the polyvision board.
Provide opportunities to practice using the Smart boards and document cameras, as well as,
the other technology used in the classrooms at Kutztown. Require more projects that focus
on using technology in lessons. Provide other types of technology, such as iPads, for us to
practice using in class.
Providing students with better understanding and awareness of the programs available and
how to use them. For example, learning what applications are available on the ipods and
ipads for students and how they can be properly integrated into the classroom. Also, a how
to class or something about how to properly use a smart board and everything you can
actually do with a smart board.
I tried to sign out a doc cam for my clinical experience, however since I do not live on
campus I could not renew it in time. I think checking out those items should be at least a
week. I come to the school every Tuesday. Three days is not enough time for someone who
does not live on campus.
I did attend a smart board presentation during pro-sem that aided my integration of
technology, but I would have liked to have attended a promethean board presentation as
well. It took me about a week to be proficient and comfortable with the promethean board.
Perhaps by actually using the technology in class? I see new smart boards hung on nearly
every classroom wall as a status symbol. I have only experienced the ceiling projector and
the pull down screen used for powerpoint presentations form a mac mini. I can honestly say
if I were in a classroom where there was only a smart or promethean board available I
would not know where the power button was or how to use it even if it were on. Perhaps
this technology has features and functions but I could not tell you what any of them are.
The absence of 'smart' technology wastes the opportunity to master it in the college
classroom along with the real classrooms. Yes, there are ways to learn in the absence of
electricity while many schools still struggle to even have copy paper let alone any pencils.
Online resources are nice if you can even access them like prezi and other internet only
available services. Technology is about understanding how to use the tool in ways to gain a
greater understanding and working knowledge about the tool and its powers that become
your powers when properly wielding the tool. Kutztown taught me that technology fails
frequently, which becomes a lesson in itself by preparing you to fly any plane without active
gages. By becoming more dependent on 'technology' we become vulnerable to its absence.
C'mon, you're in Amish Country!!!
Teach us how to use the SmartBoard in classes and offer time to "play" with them so we are
able to use it in our clinical experience confidently.
Have practice on a smart board and promethean board...and also suggest alternatives to
incorporating technology into lessons when there is very little technology available
Art education majors do not get to take the integrated technology course that all other
education majors have to take. I think it should be a requirement for all educations majors;
even in the art room we use technology.
There could be more practice with the smartboard and with emergent technologies that can
be used for educational purposes. I had also wished I'd had more experience with iMovie
and iPhoto, as I had no previous exposure to these Mac features.
More projects requiring the use of Smart/ Promethean boards
More use of library technology (databases etc.) in Elementary and Secondary education
instruction.
Work with smartboards, ipods
I think the Faculty at KU did a very good job in preparing me to integrate technology in my
lessons. One thing I would probably add into the curriculum at KU is working with response
sites such as moodle.com. Knowing how to better utilize a site such as Moodle would have
greatly improved my ability to engage the students in classroom readings, response articles,
etc.
Informing students about technologies in the Library. Also, the ITC classes seem very geared
toward elementary education, it would have been nice to incorporate more technologies
that pertain to secondary levels as well.
Bringing us to the library, showing us how to rent the technology. Lets us use the smart
boards more hands on.
Teach us how to use smart board or other technologies besides macs. Could have been
more informed on the different functions we could see in the classroom. Since it seems that
most places dont even use apple products.
A class on SMART board use.
