Web Collaboration in the broadcasting of Astronomical Events
Presentation
CanarCloud (www.canarcloud.es), as the leading supplier of "Virtualization Services and Cloud
Computing of VMware in Canarias" and the current security service provider and hosting fortified
of the Teide Observatory, is responsible for providing to the Project “GLORIA” (EU, FP7INFRASTRUCTURES-2011-2, Grant Agreement – Number 283783) and “Astronomy Citizen”
(FECYT, FCT-11-1528) the necessary infrastructure for the transmission of astronomical events
on the web through the portal www.sky-live.tv.
Infrastructure
The infrastructure deployed by CanarCloud (www.canarcloud.es) is based in a Cluster VMware
and Sphere 5 (https://www.canarcloud.es/vmware/) based in Intel Nehalem architecture
interconnected to a centralized iSCSI RAID storage capable of supporting the load of thousands
of requests against the portal www.sky-live.tv together with a balancer of DNS, which will
interconnect all Web instances, both physical and virtual of all partners, ensuring an equitable
charge sharing of all visits to the website between all levels as shown in the graph below.

The operation of this architecture is as follows:



Customers make a request to the website at the address www.sky-live.tv.
A Load Balancing System decides which of the servers in the cluster will serve each
request that comes in terms of the policy implemented.
The client is served by the selected server for the Load Balancing System.
How to collaborate? - Sharing Infrastructure.
It seeks the cooperation of public or private institutions, associations, foundations, etc. to aid in
the dissemination via the Internet gateway (sky-live.tv). The experience shows that exist a large
number of users interested in this information, where the highlight is always the exact moment
when the Astronomical Event occurs.
All the web partners that will collaborate, will be included (logo and link) on the website of the
broadcasting.
Basic Web Partner
In this type of collaboration, the institution, organization, association, etc.. temporarily attached a
machine or set of machines to the cluster property proposed. This machine (or machines) that
are grouped together, will be used by the web portal with all the contents of the broadcast.
Each machine must have the following minimum hardware and software requirements:






Processor with dual-core technology and a minimum speed of 2000 Mhz or higher.
A minimum of 2 GB of RAM
A static IP with permanent Internet connectivity at a minimum speed of 10 Mbps for each
event and at least 7 days before, to test all. This IP will be integrated into the balancer for
the duration of the collaboration.
Operating System Linux/Windows with an Apache web server 2.2 or IIS 7.5 preconfigured
to serve the sky-live.tv domain and support a high turnout of visitors.
o Apache 2.2 with the capacity of 250 customers and 10,000 customer connections,
dynamic compression of contents and keep alive disabled.
o Microsoft IIS 7.5 with dynamic management of concurrent connections without a
limit in the number of connections.
Install remote synchronization tools of files and automation of tasks for mirroring the portal
live.tv www.sky-live.tv replicating its contents every 20 minutes.
o rsync and crontab in the case of Linux.
o cwrsync tasks of Windows in the case of Windows
While Google Analytics is going to be used for overall the statistics of the portal, should
collect the full access logs of every web server for the duration of the event to be analyzed
further and get global statistical information and by collaborator.

Advanced Web Partner
Those partners who have one or more machines compatible with VMware vSphere 5 with more
than 4 GB of RAM, more than 4 cores, 3 or more IPs and a bandwidth of 100 Mbps or more may
be involved incorporating those machines as remote nodes of the Cluster.
In this case, they shall meet with the following requirements:





Install VMware vSphere 5U1 in each of the available machines.
Assign to each machine a public static IP.
Ensure the connectivity to each machine directly if you need to go through any firewall.
Provide us with the static IP of each machine along with the credentials of the
administrator of the machine and the range of IPs available to use.
We integrate this machine in the cluster and we clone many copies of an instance
preconfigured web as possible.
