Stigma Health and Close Relationships (SHCR) Lab
Application for Research Assistant
The Stigma, Health, and Close Relationships lab is a social psychology lab on Rutgers
University campus supervised by Professor Diana Sanchez. As a social psychology lab, our
studies employ diverse methodologies, ranging from explicit survey measures to implicit
reaction time responses, to scientifically assess the antecedents and consequences of gender,
racial, and body prejudice, discrimination, and stereotyping, as well as the process of
identification and categorization for social category members.
Research assistants in the SHCR lab are expected to be exceptional undergraduates with an
interest in psychology. In this vein, we require that all students have a minimum overall GPA of
3.0 and be either a major or minor in psychology. Applicants with coursework in Quantitative
Methods, Social Psychology, and advanced undergraduate classes will be given priority.
Participation in the lab is a 1-year commitment (2 semesters). Each semester will grant you 3
credits from course 391/392, Research in Psychology. If you have questions, please contact the
lab manager by emailing Mary Himmelstein (email below).
Please send completed applications to Mary Himmelstein at msh127@rutgers.edu

You must be able to dedicate one day (9am-5pm, an hour for lunch) or two evenings (5pm-8 or
9 pm) to the lab for running subjects (being an experimenter), entering data, preparing
materials, researching topics related to gender, race, close-relationships and health. This
means that you must set aside a day the semester you are planning to work in the lab. We
assign days based on availability of lab rooms and your schedule, but we cannot guarantee you
will get your first choice of day. Please rank in order of preference (1 = best day, 5 = worst day)
the day that you would like to dedicate to the lab. Do not indicate availability (i.e., rank as
best/ worst) that you are unable to honor. That is, if you have class from 8:40-11:40 on
Thursdays then you cannot do a daytime spot on Thursday and should leave that
preference blank.
