Organizing “Memory”
Data and computer instructions (software) are
saved in the computer’s memory in an organized
hierarchical format.
The “file path” of each file on the computer
is unique - it is mapped to a storage device,
directories, a file name and type. Like a
location of a hard copy file - first which
room, then which cabinet, then which
drawer etc.

Directories and Files on the
CS&E Windows System
• Students will have access to
hard drive directories as follows:
•Z:\windows\personal – personal directory
This path is often indicated by your login
name then network drive – we recommend
you access it by using “My Documents”
which links directly to this location.
Our lab PC’s have access to CD’s and devices
such as memory sticks.

Finding information on the web



When you press the search button on your
browser does your computer contact all computer
servers to search for your keyword?
Which search engine has successfully indexed all
available content on the web?
Is Yahoo a better search engine than Google? I
searched for “windows” and found 904 million
hits on Yahoo and only 177 million hits on
Google.
CS&E 200 Our Systems
Different Search Engines index and retrieve this
information in fundamentally different ways

Search Engine indices compiled differently


Crawlers (Spiders), Owner Submissions, Paid
Advertising.
Hits are found & prioritized using
different search algorithms

Owner specified keywords, Document title &
contents, by owner specified descriptions
(metatags)
Which method is best? That depends on the user’s
preferences and the scope of the search.
CS&E 200 Our Systems
How you ask is as important as Who you ask.
Many of the search engines support different syntax for
refining your searches such as “quote”, +, And, Or, Not. Some
offer advanced features with GUI interfaces.

Are you free to copy anything from the
web.. how about music for your iPOD?

It depends………..




Is it a copyrighted song?
Do you already own the song legally?
May you lend you iPOD for another person
to listen to your music?
May you make multiple copies for your own
use, or for use other than your own?
During lab you will explore these questions
