Growth Group Discussion
For the week of January 18, 2015
Connect
Share a pleasant surprise you have experienced as the result of being a
Christian.
3. Verse 17 refers back to 1 Peter 1:17, where we are warned that God
judges everyone according to our deeds. How does being disciplined as
believers relate to God’s judgment? See 1 Corinthians 11:32 and Hebrews
12:4-8. Is persecution part of that judgment?
Review
What point from this Sunday’s message and Bible verses caught your
attention or challenged you?
Explore
1. Apparently, the Christians addressed in 1 Peter 4:12 were surprised at
being persecuted (the word for surprised literally means bewildered
astonishment). Read John 15:20 & 16:33 and 1 John 3:13. What are some
reasons why we are surprised by suffering?
2. 1 Peter 4:13 tells us to rejoice at participating in Christ’s sufferings. See
also Romans 8:17 and Philippians 3:10. What do these verses mean to
you?
4. How do you interpret the statement in verse 18 that it is difficult for the
righteous to be saved?
5. Peter closes this chapter by telling Christians who suffer for the Lord to
commit themselves to God and do good works. What does this mean in
practice? What are the benefits for the believer?
