structural and physical properties of matter, gases, thermochemistry, quantum theory of the
atom, electronic structure of atoms, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, hybridisation and
molecular orbitals.
Textbook:
“Chemistry”, Chang and Goldsby, 11th Edition, McGraw-Hill, 2013. You can borrow
copies of the textbook from the Library. You are strongly encouraged to have access to a copy
of the textbook. You can purchase the book from the bookstore.
Supplementary Texts:
There are other excellent texts on the subject. You can borrow these from the Library.
You are well advised to review them as well.

There will be two midterm exams and one final exam at preannounced dates. There
will, also, be 8 short online exams at preannounced dates. Lab experiments are to be
conducted under the supervision of a lab instructor. Teamwork and coherent experimentation
is the aim of your lab work, and therefore emphasis will be placed on completing the
experiments as teams rather than as individuals. You are required to have your own lab coat,
goggles and the lab manual. Lab scheduling will be provided by your lab instructor.
You are advised to read the relevant course material and lab work beforehand.
Additional Material:
Students are strongly encouraged to expand their knowledge of the course through the
use of other relevant books and supplementary material. Course syllabus and all other
relevant handouts and assignments, as well as solutions to the midterm and the final exams,
will be posted on the course page. My website carries also some other downloadable
material. The assignment questions are for own benefit and are not to be turned in. You will
also find your grades as well as announcements about the course and the lab posted on the
website at
www.onurhan.com
Please check it frequently.
You might receive collective or individual e-mail messages from me regarding the
running of the course. Please check your METU mailbox frequently.
You will find the Chemistry Group at www.facebook.com/metunccchemistry and at
@METUNCCChemistry on Twitter as well. We shall be posting some announcements and
info there.
Office Hours:
Students should feel free to discuss any question(s) related with the course during
office hours. My office is at SZ-44.
Tutorial Hours:
There will be an optional one-hour interactive tutorial session at 12.40 hrs at SZ-08
each Friday. Although attendance is not compulsory, you are well advised to come to these
and participate in the discussion. Do not expect the instructor to just write a problem and the
solution on the board. As the tutorials are designed to expand your knowledge of the course
material, there should be discussions during these hours and students are expected to initiate
at least some of them.
Grading:
Your final letter grade will be based on a weighted average of the following:
Lab
– 10% (Previous lab work may be accepted)
Short exams – 10%
2 Midterms – 20% each
Final
– 40%
Admittance to the Final Exam:
In order to be admitted to the final exam, students must
have obtained at least a lab grade of 6.00 out of 10.
FAILURE TO DO THIS WILL LEAD TO A FINAL
LETTER GRADE OF NA. STUDENTS WITH NA ARE
NOT ALLOWED TO SIT FOR RESIT EXAMS.
Attendance:
You are expected to attend all class and lab activities. It will help you grasp and feel
the continuity of lecture material. Attendance will be recorded all lectures. Regular
attendance might help you with your final letter grade.
