COURSE OBJECTIVES:
UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE, THE STUDENT SHOULD:
1. HAVE A CLEAR,BALANCED, AND UP TO DATE INTRODUCTORY KNOWLEDGE OF
PHYSICAL, COGNITIVE, SOCIAL, MORAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
DURING INFANCY, CHILDHOOD, AND ADOLESCENCE.
2. BE FAMILIAR WITH BASIC TERMS, CONSTRUCTS, AND
PRINCIPLES INVOLVED IN THE STUDY OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR.
3. BE FAMILIAR WITH AND ABLE TO USE THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD AND THE
VARIOUS RESEARCH APPROACHES INVOLVED IN THE STUDY OF DEVELOPMENTAL
PSYCHOLOGY.
4. BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND SUMMARIZE THE MAJOR THEORETICAL
APPROACHES(BIOLOGICAL, PSYCHODYNAMIC, BEHAVIORAL, COGNITIVE,
HUMANISTIC,SOCIOCULTURAL, AND EVOLUTIONARY) USED TO EXPLAIN HUMAN
BEHAVIOR.
5. BE HELPED IN THEIR PERSONAL GROWTH BY DEVELOPING THEIR
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AND INCREASING THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF
THEMSELVES, THEIR RELATIONSHIPS, AND THE WORLD THEY LIVE IN.
6. HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF HUMAN DIVERSITY.
7. RECOGNIZE THAT THE FIELD OF PSYCHOLOGY IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING,
RATHER THAN ONE IN WHICH WE HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS.
8. DEVELOP GOOD WRITING AND ORAL COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS. THESE SKILLS
ARE HIGHLY SOUGHT BY GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS, AS WELL
AS BY EMPLOYERS.
9. HAVE EXPERIENCED AN ENJOYABLE AND MEANINGFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCE.
PROCEDURES FOR ACCOMPLISHING THESE OBJECTIVES:
1. CLASSROOM LECTURES (INCLUDING CASE VIGNETTES AND THE
INSTRUCTOR'S PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES) TO COMPLIMENT,
CLARIFY,AND ELABORATE ON THE MATERIAL PRESENTED IN THE TEXTBOOK.
2. CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS
3. VIDEOS AND CLASS DEMONSTRATIONS TO STIMULATE INTEREST AND
SUPPLEMENT LECTURE MATERIAL.
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE COURSE:
1. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO READ ASSIGNED CHAPTERS IN THE
TEXTBOOK BEFORE THE MATERIAL IS DISCUSSED IN CLASS.
2. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN CLASS DISCUSSIONS.
3. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE 5 EXAMS AND TO WRITE A
4 – 6 PAGE TERM PAPER (SEE TERM PAPER HANDOUT).
4. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ADHERE TO ALL COLLEGE POLICIES AS
PUT FORTH IN THE SUFFOLK COMMUNITY COLLEGE CATALOG.
EXAMS:
1. EXAMS WILL BE BASED ON CLASSROOM LECTURES, DISCUSSIONS, AND
DEMONSTRATIONS, AS WELL AS ASSIGNED TEXTBOOK CHAPTERS.
2. THERE WILL BE 5 HALF-HOUR EXAMINATIONS ON THE DATES
SPECIFIED IN THE COURSE OUTLINE. YOUR FINAL EXAM GRADE WILL BE
BASED ON YOUR 4 HIGHEST EXAM GRADES.
3. EXAMS WILL CONSIST OF MULTIPLE CHOICE, FILL-IN-THE-BLANK,
MATCHING, AND TRUE-FALSE TYPE QUESTIONS. THERE WILL ALSO BE
SOME SHORT ESSAY QUESTIONS.

1. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED AND IS CONSIDERED IN FORMULATING
STUDENTS' FINAL GRADES.
2. THE COLLEGE DEFINES "EXCESSIVE ABSENCE OR LATENESS" (P. 49
THE COLLEGE CATALOG) AS "MORE THAN THE EQUIVALENT OF ONE
OF CLASS MEETINGS DURING THE SEMESTER." "EXCESSIVE ABSENCE
LATENESS MAY LEAD TO FAILURE IN A COURSE OR REMOVAL FROM
CLASS ROSTER."
