PSLE - a placement exam
•
Need to reflect the relative achievement
level of pupils within their peers.
•
Places pupils into different courses
according to their academic ability
•
Enables posting to secondary schools by
merit and as far as possible into a school
of their choice.
39
The PSLE Aggregate Score
• Is a sum of scores
• Incorporates performance of
pupils in all 4 subjects
• Allows pupils to be ranked
fairly
40
Can raw scores be used?
NO !
Why Not?
• Different subjects have different
levels of difficulty
• So are the spread of marks from
the average mark, i.e. the
standard deviation (spread =
standard deviation)

T-Score converts average mark of each subject to a
common score of 50 points. It also converts other
marks taking into consideration the extent to which
they differ from the average and the size of spread of
the marks around the average
What is a T-Score?
• It gives the relative position of a
pupil’s performance as compared
to the performance of all the other
pupils in that subject
• The raw mark obtained in the
exam only shows how good the
pupil is in that subject, not how
good he is as compared to others
How is the T-Score calculated
for each subject?
(X - Y)
=
+
T 50 10
Z
where
X: pupil’s mark for the subject
Y: average mark (mean) scored by all
pupils
Z: spread of marks around the average
mark (standard deviation)
Example:
• Pupil’s mark (X) in exam
= 50.0
• Average mark (Y) scored by all pupils = 68.0
• Spread of marks (Z) around the average
mark (Y) = 14.0
T = 50 + 10
= 37.14
(50 - 68.0)
14.0
How is the Aggregate Score
calculated?
By adding the T-Scores of
the 4 subjects
Example:

What about Subject-based
Banding?
• Pupils taking foundation
subjects and other
combinations, other than 4
standard subjects, are not
shortchanged.
• The raw marks obtained in the
exam by these pupils are also
converted to T-score
FEL
T-Score

As foundation subjects are generally less demanding,
pupils are required to score a higher score than a
standard subject in order to have a same T-score as a
standard pupil. In this case, the T-Score converts
average mark of each subject to a common score of
50 points.

Why are partnerships important?
• Fathers had a buffering effect in protecting boys from
extreme victimisation and daughters have less
psychological distress at age 33 (Flouri, 2005, UK
research)
• Fathers’ involvement at age 7 was found to be
significantly associated with educational attainment at
age 20 (Flouri, 2005)
• Good fathering was associated with adolescents’
positive school engagement and higher academic
achievement (Dr Ong Ai Choo, 2000, Singapore)

Network of Support
• The PSG creates a network of links for the school,
its families and the community.
• The end result is not only a rich diversity of
talents, but also an extended networking system
for the benefit of the pupils and the school.
• Parents are valued as partners in their children's
education
• Enrich and support school personnel, pupils and
their families

A water tank used for flushing a toilet bowl is shown below. The
flushing and re-filling system is not shown in the diagram.
After flushing, water enters and re-fills the tank. The tank will stop
filling when the water reaches level L.
James wanted to use less water to flush the toilet bowl. Michelle
suggested putting a plastic bottle filled with stones into the water tank.
Explain how Michelle’s suggestion would help reduce the amount of
