A. Course Description
In this course you will learn about the many places around the world where Spanish is spoken. You will learn
about geography, history, and famous people. You will experience many aspects of culture, from everyday
activities and holidays to music and art. You will grow to understand the great diversity of the people who
speak Spanish.
B. Learning Goals in General Education
Participate in simple face-to-face communication
Create statements and questions to communicate independently when speaking and writing
Understand main ideas and some details of material on familiar topics when listening and reading
Understand simple statements and questions when listening and reading
Meet limited practical and social writing needs
Use knowledge of the culture in the development of communication skills
Use knowledge of the components of language, including grammar, to increase accuracy of expression
Cope successfully in straightforward social and survival situations

Make Up Work
It is the student’s responsibility to find out missed work for all classes the day the student returns. Make up
work will be due after a period of days equal to the length of absence plus one day to receive full credit.

Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty includes such things as cheating, inventing false information or citations, plagiarism, and
helping someone else commit an act of academic dishonesty.
Students found guilty of academic dishonesty will receive a zero and parents will be contacted.

o 1st offense: Sign the book.
o 2nd offense: Sign book, call office for principal or counselor, and call parents.
o 3rd offense: Call office for principal or counselor, wait in the office, and call
parents.

Chapter 1: the geography of Spain, the history of Spain, Spanish culture, review verbs in the
present & preterite forms, preterite of stem-changing verbs, y preterite of irregular verbs. QUIZ:
vocabulary words. TEST: chapter 1 lesson 1.
Chapter 1: nouns in that begin with a- & ha-, demonstrative pronouns, possessive pronouns,
trains of the future, and immigrants in tarifa (reading). TEST: Chapter 1 lessons 2-3. Chapter 2:
the geography of Ecuador, Peru, & Bolivia. QUIZ: Vocabulary words.
Chapter 2: the history & culture of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. The imperfect, the imperfect vs.
the preterite, and expressing two past actions in the same sentence. QUIZ: imperfect and
preterite. TEST: Chapter 2 lessons 1-2.
Chapter 2 lesson 3: expressing necessity, possibility, wishes, preferences, and demands with the
subjunctive. TEST: Chapter 2 lesson 3. Chapter 3 lesson 1: the geography, history, and culture
of Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Review the verbs ser and estar. TEST: Chapter 3
lesson 1. Chapter 3 lesson 2: Summer fashion & leaving home to go to college. QUIZ: verbs ser
& estar.
Week 12-14 Chapter 3 lesson 2: using verbs with indirect objects to express surprise, interest, and annoyance.
Expressing likes and needs with gustar and faltar. TEST: Chapter 3 lesson 2.
THANKSGIVING BREAK!

Chapter 3 lesson 3: using the subjunctive to express emotion, doubt, or uncertainty. TEST:
Chapter 3 lesson 3. Review for semester exam: chapter 1-3.
SEMESTER EXAM
Week 18-20 Begin working on project 1 (piñatas). Chapter 4 lesson 1: the geography, history, and culture of
Central American countries. Future tense & conditional tense. QUIZ: vocabulary words &
future tense. TEST: Chapter 4 lesson 1.
Week 21-24 Project 1 cont’d. Chapter 4 lesson 2: finances & direct and indirect object pronouns. QUIZ: DO
& IO pronouns. TEST: Chapter 4 lesson 2.
Week 25-27 Begin working on 2 (music video). Chapter 4 lesson 3: Public announcements in the newspaper,
microchip implants in pets for identification, imperfect subjunctive, and the subjunctive with
conjunctions of time. QUIZ: Vocabulary words. TEST: Chapter 4 lesson 3.
1 Week STAAR TESTING
Week 28-31 Project 2 cont’d. Chapter 5 lesson 1: geography, history and culture of Mexico. Present perfect&
the imperative. QUIZ: Vocabulary words. TEST: Chapter 5 lesson 1.
1 Week STAAR TESTING
Week 32-34
Chapter 5 lesson 2: transportation, progressive tense, placement of direct and indirect object
pronouns, and direct & indirect object pronouns with commands. TEST: Chapter 5 lesson 2.
2 Weeks STAAR TESTING
Week 35-37
Chapter 5 lesson 3: windsurfing in Mexico & Mexican families, pluperfect, conditional perfect,
future perfect, subjunctive with indefinite ideas, and subjunctive in relative clauses. TEST:
Chapter 5 lesson 3. Review for semester exam. Present projects to the class.
