The term “brandy” is derived from the Dutch word
“Brandawijn,” meaning burned wine. It is generally a
term used to describe a spirit distilled from wine, i.e.
grapes. There are, however, brandy varieties that are
distillations of other fruits. Produced in most countries
where grapes are grown, only a brandy from the region
of Cognac, may carry the name “cognac.” “Armagnac” is
a grape brandy from the Gascony region of
Southwestern France and up to 200 years older than
cognac.
