This lesson will be displayed and brought to the students through film analysis and
large group discussion. The students will watch a 26 minute film on South Korea’s
rise to economic and political prominence. This film will serve as both a compare
and contrast model and as an introduction to mixed economies. The students have
previously view a documentary on life in North Korea. Now the students will discuss
in a large group setting the vast differences between the cultures, political, and
economic systems of each nation. Finally, the students will be asked to complete a
short writing prompt comparing and contrasting the economies, political structure,
and cultures of both North and South Korea. I will post the following question on my
wiki page discussion board for the students to complete, “After viewing films on
North and South Korea, what are the glaring differences in political, economic, and
cultural structure of both nations? Please state why command economies can never
succeed in competing against a mixed economy.” The students will be given the last
half hour of class to complete this prompt.
