New Graduate Certificate Program
1. Science, Mathematics and Technology Teaching
Joy Schackow discussed plans to implement new 15-credit hour graduate certificate
program. Several changes were recommended by the council to be addressed in a revised
submission, including:
• Change the title of the certificate program to Science, Mathematics, OR Technology
Teaching
• Provide additional explanation to indicate that students Must choose an area of
concentration for the certificate program.
• Rephrase “technology-enriched learning” in the certificate description
• Consider the need for a project or portfolio to synthesize learning across the program
and demonstrate Student Learning Outcomes. According to the Graduate School
Certificate Policy found at http://www.graduateschool.ufl.edu/files/certificatepolicy.pdf "Proposals for Graduate Certificates must include student learning

4. EDG5XXX Knowing and Learning in STEM Education
Committee recommended that the following statement from the syllabus should be
removed: “Note: that this course may contain undergraduates who are taking it as SMT
3100 with some differences in assignments.” The committee explored the motion of
conditional approval with the following recommendations: Either removal of statement
about undergraduate course cross listing or if the two courses are offered together, then
the syllabus for each class must be submitted with clear indication of how graduate course
differs than undergraduate course.
Motion for CONDITIONAL APPROVAL with necessary changes by Catherine Emihovich

5. SCE5XXX Diversity and Equity in Science Teaching
This is a previously recycled request. The previously requested changes were made in the
syllabus. New questions about course level and recommendation to change course to an
introductory level from an intermediate one. Committee also recommended removing term
“inclusive” from the rationale. If these changes are accepted by faculty submitter/program
course can be approved

Discussion Items
Doctoral Research Course Requirements
FPC sent this agenda item to CCC for review and proposed action this year.
Questions/issues have arisen from faculty about the process and resulting decisions
regarding the approval of alternative/substitute courses to meet doctoral research course
requirements. It is unclear who makes the final decision about acceptable
substitute/alternative courses, or the process used for the decision
For doctoral programs in HDOSE, students are not presently able to get a Minor in REM
because of graduate school rules about outside/external committee members for doctoral
committee. Also what constitutes a minor/concentration in REM given that doctoral
students already take 12 hours of required coursework to meet school/program research
requirements.
Will continue discussion next meeting.
Other Business - None
