What is the Right Way Program?
Service Skills Australia (SSA) not only develops a suite of Training Packages but also has a role in
their quality implementation.
The Right Way program is part of SSA’s strategic work to achieve quality skills outcomes
throughout the service industries. It is a national accreditation program, linked directly to Training
Package requirements, designed to promote best practice in service industry training.
Our objective is to promote and ensure the Right Way does this by providing accreditation
widespread use of:
in three key areas:

assessment environments which are as
industry realistic as possible with equipment
currently used by modern service industry
businesses

professional trainers and assessors with
educational expertise, significant industry
experience and current knowledge of
service industry workplace practice through
a commitment to professional development

effective learning resources which align to
Training Package content
 quality training and assessment facilities
 quality trainers and assessors
 quality training resources

The Suite of Right Way Products
Right Way Training Facility Accreditation
Access to a realistic industry environment plays an important role in skills development and
provides graduates that should be immediately useful and competent in a service industry
environment. RTOs who adhere to the environmental and resource requirements prescribed within
the Training Packages can achieve industry recognition of their training facilities.
Right Way Trainer & Assessor Accreditation
Individual trainers and assessors who have industry experience, current industry skills and
knowledge and a qualification in training and or assessment can achieve industry recognition as a
Right Way Trainer and or Assessor. To maintain this recognition, they must participate in
professional development activities.
Right Way Training Resource Accreditation
Developers of any type of training and or assessment resource designed to align to a service
industry Training Package can achieve industry recognition of the material as a Right Way Training
Resource. Developers can be any type of organisation including RTOs.

Right Way Industry Advisors
Advice from Current Industry Practitioners Underpins the Program
Right Way uses the expertise of current industry practitioners, known as Industry Advisors, from
each sector of the service industries to evaluate applications. Their participation in the evaluation
process underpins the effective operation of the Right Way program.
Industry Advisors are engaged by SSA to:

participate in the evaluation of RTO facilities to ensure equipment and other resources reflect
those currently used in workplaces

evaluate applications for trainer and assessor recognition to ensure they have the correct
industry skills and experience

evaluate learning resources for relevance to current industry practice
They are only engaged to participate in assessments within the area of their current industry
practice and expertise. For example, a hairdresser would be engaged to support an evaluation of
hairdressing training facilities, a commercial cook would review applications for kitchen based
trainers, a tour guide would review learning resources used to develop skills in tour guiding.
The participation of these practitioners who currently work in industry is crucial to the success of
the Right Way program. These Industry Advisors are involved in all evaluation processes because
they have current industry knowledge, expertise in current operational practice and knowledge of
what workplace equipment and resources are currently used.
Industry Advisors are supported by SSA or agency evaluators. These people have a substantial
depth of knowledge of the relevant Training Package and competency based training and
assessment. They may or may not have had current industry experience in the service industry
field relevant to the applicant.

Criteria for the selection of Right Way Industry Advisors
Essential Skills and Experience
Industry Advisors play a major role in ensuring that that any person or organisation granted Right
Way recognition is meeting current industry standards. Currency of the Industry Advisor’s industry

It is essential that Industry Advisors:
1. Have relevant industry experience in one or more fields of service industry operation. This
means they have actually worked in a job where they would have applied the particular
Training package competencies that they will now use in Right Way evaluation processes.
2. Have comprehensive current knowledge of their field of the industry, current industry practices,
various job roles and equipment and resources used on a day to day basis in service industry
workplaces relevant to their field of expertise. This means they will be in current service
industry employment.
Importantly, Industry Advisors primary employer should not be a registered training organisation,
although they may work part time as a trainer or assessor.
To be valuable to the Right Way process, Industry Advisors will be employed in the relevant
industry on a regular basis that provides for current skills and working knowledge of industry
practice.
Desired Skills and Experience
It is desirable that that Industry Advisors:
1. Have industry-based supervisory and or management experience in one or more fields of
service industry operation

3. Have a qualification in competency based training and assessment
4. Participate in assessment and or training activities conducted in the workplace
5. Hold current or past board and committee positions, association and or industry peak body
memberships
6. Participate in relevant industry professional development activities
Engagement by Service Skills Australia
Service Skills Australia will often seek advice from industry associations covering specific industry
sectors. Those associations may recommend and refer industry practitioner members to participate
as Right Way Industry Advisors.
Service Skills Australia and its Right Way program is independent from the operation of industry
associations and professional bodies. It is important to note that Industry Advisors are engaged
directly by SSA or its agents after reviewing their expression of interest to participate in the Right
Way program. Whilst associations may provide recommendations, SSA or its agents will be
responsible for the decision to select appropriate advisors and reserves the right not to utilise those
recommended. All decisions are merit based using selection criteria.
