OCC Instructor Course Pre-Course Exercises
A critical part of successful instruction of a course is for the instructor to have a
thorough knowledge of the material to be delivered. OCC Instructors’ knowledge
of the material must be steeped in real experience and diverse enough to
effectively answer a diversity of questions. In order to demonstrate your
knowledge of the core material in the FL course we would like you to answer the
questions below.
Please read the FL student manual and then answer these questions. We are
looking for answers that demonstrate a strong and comprehensive understanding
of the concepts and that are clear and concise. Once the document is completed,
please send it to your instructor with your name in the filename.
Your answers will be marked prior to the start of the course so that any issues
that arise can be addressed during the course. The deadline for submission of
this exercise is two full days before the start of the course.
1. Inherited personality traits have been shown to be strong determinants of the
type of risks a person likes to take.
a. Describe a characteristic of your own personality. b. Describe how this characteristic adds strength to your leadership style.
c. Give an example of how this same characteristic has led you to make an
unwise leadership decision. d. Describe how awareness of this characteristic has helped you manage
your leadership style
2. Explain why it is essential that the participants, activity and venue must be
integrated to create a quality event. 3. Explain why a common strategy of risk management is to limit the complexity
of the terrain that a leader is allowed to access. 4. How does site inspection prior to an event help a leader plan for a safer and
higher quality event? 5. How does ‘participant centered’ programming help us avoid psychological
injury? 6. List the three physical hazards that you think most commonly affect day hiking
with minors. For each hazard provide a short list of defenses. 7. Explain why a well-planned event increases the resilience of the group in the
event that something unexpected occurs. 8. Explain why a strong leadership team can help the leader improve the quality
of an event. 9. Why does effective pre-event team building with your participants improve the
quality of their experience? 10. Explain why it is much easier to be environmentally responsible if your event
is well planned event. 11. Discuss the relationship between good communication and effective group
management on the trail. 12. How does post event facilitation help your group gain additional value from
the event?
