Connecting The Crucible to Modern Day Events
Essential Question: How are themes observed in the 1950’s and in The Crucible still prevalent in
today’s world?
TASK: After reading The Crucible and informational non-fiction articles about recent court
cases, write an essay in which you explain how multiple themes observed in US History (1950’s
McCarthyism) and Literature (The Crucible) are prevalent in today’s world. Support
your discussion with evidence from the text(s).
Last week, you read and wrote about each of the following court cases:
The Casey Anthony Case
The Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman
The Troy Davis Case
The West Memphis Three Case
The Danzinger Bridge Shooting Case
The following themes or “big ideas” are present in The Crucible:
-lies and deceit
-reputation/status
-compassion and forgiveness
-good vs. evil
-justice
-religion
-jealousy
-hypocrisy
After choosing the court case above that interests you the most, select three of these themes.
In a well-constructed 3.5 essay, compare and contrast each of these themes as seen in your
chosen court case and The Crucible.
You will be expected to use three sources related to your court case of choice. You can either
use these sources in your essay or read them to strengthen your understanding of the case. You
are allowed to use one of the articles from class as one of your sources.
