Dear Forensics Community,
We are proud to bring you the annual Boilermaker Special Speech and Debate Tournament. The
tournament will be held at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana from October 26th to
October 27th. Parliamentary debate competition will be held on both Friday and Saturday, while
IE’s have been condensed down to Saturday only. This year’s tournament will again feature a 2day tournament format (and only one-day for our IE-only friends), and the selected weekend will
not conflict with any home football games for (at least) the next four years- making hotel
accommodations significantly easier to find (and more affordable)!
We will be offering competition in all 11 AFA events, and NPDA Parliamentary Debate. All
events will break to appropriate elimination rounds. IE-only competitors may enter up to four
events per flight, while debaters may enter up to two events per flight.
Awards will be presented to: all IE finalists, all break-round debaters, the top-10 debate speakers,
the Quadrathon winner, and the top three schools in team IE sweepstakes, team debate
sweepstakes, and combined team sweepstakes.
The entry deadline is 5pm on Tuesday, October 23rd. Please submit entries by emailing
purdueforensics@gmail.com. All entries must include an email address and a phone number
that we can reach you at in the days immediately prior to the tournament for confirmation.
We are already working to ensure that the Boilermaker provides you a friendly, challenging,
healthy, and educational tournament to kick off your year. We hope you enjoy West
Lafayette/Lafayette as much as we do and we look forward to seeing you soon! Please let us
know if we can be of any assistance in the meantime.
Warmest regards,

Scheduling Notes: We will make every effort to accelerate the elimination rounds for debate if
contestants are no longer cross-entered in IE’s. It is important to note that this schedule is
tentative and will likely change subtly between the time entries are received and the tournament
begins. We will notify programs entered in debate of any schedule revisions prior to Friday.
While the start time may be pushed later, it would not be any earlier than what is listed above.
IE’s: DI and POI will follow AFA rules; all other IEs will follow NFA rules. Students’ speeches
and interpretation material must be new for the 2012- academic year. Any student that misses a
round of competition will be dropped from further rounds of that event. Please attend your
scheduled rounds!
Debate: Two divisions will be offered ensuring a separation between novices and open-level
competitors (e.g. last year’s divisions were a combined Novice/JV and Open). The first two
rounds will be preset while the remaining prelim rounds will be power matched. All winning
records in Open will break to elimination rounds, while a fixed elimination round appropriate for
the number of entries in the secondary division will be determined.
Please note NPDA’s revised guidelines for the classification of novices in parliamentary debate.
Novice competitors are students with no more than one previous semester of high school debate
experience, in their first year of collegiate competition (this is a change from no previous high
school experience). If your debaters are freshmen with one or more years of high school debate
experience, they are NOT novices!
Entries: Students only competing in IE’s may enter a maximum of four IE events per flight
grouping. Parli debaters may enter into two IE events per flight, to coincide with debate round
time constraints. STUDENTS are entirely RESPONSIBLE for getting to all their events in the
allotted time period. Students should attend their IE rounds first—judges will give debaters an
opportunity to perform first. Two duos count as two events. BE ADVISED: JUDGES WILL
BE LEAVING ROOMS WHEN ROUNDS ARE SCHEDULED TO END. The tournament
heavily recommends that students enter a humane number of events.
Judging: One judge covers 2 parli teams, and/or 6 IE slots. All judges should be available for
their team’s respective debate elimination and/or IE final rounds. IE critics covering team entries
are responsible for judging through both sets of IE finals. Debate critics are responsible for
judging at least one elimination round past the point of their school’s last debate team. WE
WILL HIRE YOUR EXTRA JUDGES AND/OR WAIVE A PORTION OF YOUR ENTRY
FEES IF YOU BRING EXTRA CRITICS! If you choose to help us out by bringing extra judges,
please let us know when you submit entries so that we can make arrangements to compensate
you or your critics.
Please Note: If you indicate an event area and we are unable to assign you to that area (e.g. your
affiliated school comprises nearly half of the field, disallowing you from judging in that event),
we will ask you to be flexible and may assign you to other event areas. As a last resort, the
tournament may need to group competitors from the same school in the same IE section in order
to free up possible judge constraints. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Fees: A fee of $75.00 will be assessed for each covered Parli team ($150.00 for each uncovered
team). A fee of $8.00 will be assessed for each covered IE slot ($18.00 for each uncovered slot).
Competitor drops made after 5pm, October 25th will be assessed a drop fee of $10.00. Drops
made at/the day of registration will be assessed a fee of $15.00 per IE slot and $50.00 per Parli
team. Name changes are free. Schools dropping judges after noon on October 26th will be
assessed $50.00 per dropped judge (and the potential recalculation of fees reflecting uncovered
entries)! PLEASE BRING YOUR CRITICS!
Directions: Purdue University is located in beautiful West Lafayette, Indiana. The Beering
(BRNG) Liberal Arts and Education Building (where the tournament registration will be held) is
a short distance off of State Street (State Route 26). From State Street, turn onto University
Street (you can only turn one way). BRNG is the second building on the right-hand side of the
road. Park in the garage at the intersection of University and Second Street- this is directly across
the street from the north entrance of BRNG. Turn left on Second Street to get to the entrance to
the parking garage. Registration will be in the lobby area (1st floor) of BRNG. In the event of bad
weather, an underground pathway connects the parking garage with the basement of BRNG.
Tournament Parking: Free parking is available in the parking garage on University Street after
5pm Friday (and all day Saturday). For programs with Parli teams arriving earlier on Friday
afternoon, we have made arrangements with parking services covering you for that afternoon.
Please do not park in any restricted areas.
Food: For lunch on Saturday, there are a host of restaurant options in the Purdue Memorial
Union (PMU), (which is an ~5 minute walk from BRNG), and on Chauncey Hill, (approximately
10min. from BRNG). We are once again considering a pizza order, or similar in-house option,
for lunch on Saturday. We will provide more information directly to schools following
registration.
Special Needs: If you or any of your competitors have special needs, please let us know with
your submitted entry. We will do everything in our power to accommodate these requests. Our
primary building, BRNG, is equipped to handle sight and mobility impaired individuals.
Hotels:
The greater Lafayette/West Lafayette area has numerous hotels that can accommodate your
team. All of the hotels that we list here are within a short 10-15 minute drive to campus.
