BSC 307 5-E Model Lesson Plan
Title: Mineral Properties Laboratory
Grade Level:
9
Objectives:
-Identify mineral properties
-Identify specific minerals
-Record and analyze data
Illinois Learning Standards:
ILS Stage H 12 E 1.c. Apply scientific inquiries and technological designs to investigate
the explanations of the geologic features and structures relating physical and chemical
properties of minerals.
Engagement:
I will show the students various picture of minerals and where they are typically found. I
will then inform the students that all of the scientists in the world have forgotten how to
distinguish minerals apart, in which, the students are the only ones that can properly
identify their properties. Once they know the specific properties they will be able to
name them again. I will then ask the students which are some ways of describing
minerals that we have previously learned about in our lesson. Also, once the mineral
samples have been passed out, it will further their engagement
Exploration:
Students will work in their groups at their lab stations to identify characteristics of each
individual mineral and how to properly identify each.
Explanation:
I will bring the class together to discuss some of their finding throughout the lab. This
will help to clear up any confusion or problems a group may have encountered during
the lab activity.
Elaboration:
The students will receive a post lab in which they will have some time after the lab to
finish. If the students cannot finish the post lab they will take the worksheet home to
turn into the next day.
Evaluation(Assessment Strategies):
The students participation and involvement in the lab will be informally assessed. The
students will turn in the post lab and the identification sheet for the lab for a graded
assessment.
Rationale:
Students will be able to visualize, manipulate, and identify minerals that commonly
formed within the Earth’s lithosphere. Testing the minerals properties is a hand-on
experience that allows students to get a better understanding of our Earth and its
processes.
