IS&GS – Engineering & Technology Capability
Description of Business Environment:
Lockheed Martin is a large multi-national corporation specialising in the management of
complex technology programmes. In the UK Lockheed Martin specialises in the
development, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products
and services. The company employs more than 3,000 people in the UK working across
21 sites, on a wide range of major programmes spanning the aerospace, defence and
civil sectors. Our Information Systems & Global Solutions (IS&GS) products and
services include: Air Traffic Management, Communications Systems (Data Links),
Geospatial Intelligence, Information Assurance, Information Communications
Technology, Intelligence Analysis Applications, IT and Network Design and Support.
Lockheed Martin heritage companies pioneered the development of modern air traffic
control systems in the United States more than 50 years ago. Today our systems handle
75 per cent of the air traffic in the U.S. and approximately 60 per cent of the world’s air
traffic. When it comes to air traffic safety and efficiency, Lockheed Martin’s proven track
record and industry-leading innovations make it the world’s most trusted air traffic control
partner.
In the UK Lockheed Martin has supported NATS since the early 1990s, starting with the
development of the current en-route air traffic system, migration and on-going
development and support. NATS has now identified the need to move to a new strategic
platform to meet the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) objectives, and has
formed a strategic partnership with Lockheed Martin to support their technology
transformation programme over the coming years as their systems integration partner.
The programme to deploy SESAR based technologies is one of the most ambitious
programmes NATS has ever undertaken and will transform UK air traffic management.
