Mental Benefits of Physical Activity
-Mental and behavioral disorders are estimated to account for
13.0% of the global burden of disease, yet most countries spend
less than 1% of their health budget on mental health.
-Regular Exercise can help preventative mental disorders from
developing. (Exercise 3 or more times a week for 30mins+)
• Major depression 13% reduced to 8%
• Anxiety disorders 5% to 3%
• Social phobia 11% to 7%
• Generalized anxiety disorder 4% to 2%
• Panic attacks 6% to 3%
Physical Activity as Prevention of Mental
Disorders.
• Physical activity as a population-level mental
disorder prevention strategy has not yet been
studied extensively.
• Persons who had become physically active over a 3
year interval had positive changes in emotional wellbeing while the opposite was true for those who had
become less active.
• Physical activity can make children feel good and
enhance their sense of self-esteem.
Increasing physical activity in
populations
• Encouragement at ‘‘points of decision’’ ,
posters near elevators to encourage people to
use stairs, community-wide, highly visible,
multiple intervention, approaches self-help
groups, and policy changes.
• School-based physical education, social
support in community settings.

• Physical inactivity is a modifiable risk factor for
cardiovascular disease and a widening variety of
other chronic diseases, including diabetes, cancer
(colon and breast), obesity, hypertension, bone and
joint diseases (osteoporosis and osteoarthritis), and
depression.
• Both men and women who reported increased levels
of physical activity and fitness were found to have
reductions in relative risk by about 20%–35% of early
death

disease for the future

Cost of Inactivity
• Increases the chances of becoming overweight and
developing chronic diseases.
• Inactivity was associated with over 9 million cases of
cardiovascular disease in 2001. (its probsies worse
now)
• Recent studies have shown that people who sit and
watch television extensively have a greater chance of
dying earlier.
• A study(Nurses Health Study) showed that every two
hours that women spend watching TV they have a 23 %
chance higher of becoming obese and 14% chance
higher of developing diabetes.

• Make a habit of walking or cycling instead of
driving
• Take the stairs instead of the elevator
• DO YARD WORK SON
• Take a pet for a stroll in the park
• Have walk meetings instead of sit meetings

• Clean your house regularly
• Park far from the entrance to stores or school
for the extra walk
• Drink all the water
• POSITIVE ATTITUDE, only you can prevent fat
from happening!!!
