Virtues of a Hafiz

1.

Allah says in the Quara’n

ٍر كَّدُّم ن م ْلَهَف رْك ذل ل َنآ ْرُقْلا اَن ْرَّسَي ْدَقَل َو

(Indeed we have made the Qura’n easy for memorization (for boys and girls) so is there anyone there to memorize!) (54/17)

 Because the memorization of the Holy Qura’n is so virtues and so important Allah Tala is encouraging the believers to memorize the qura’n again and again in the Chapter al-Qamar. This verse is repeated in the same chapter four times.

2.

In the chapter 15 alhijr, verse 9 Allah says

َنوُظ فاَحَل ُهَل اَّن إ َو َرْك ذلا اَنْل َّزَن ُنْحَن اَّن إ

( ‘ Indeed we have revealed the Qura’n and indeed we shall protect it’ )

The people who memorize the holy Q ura’n are called huffaz (plural of Hafiz) because Allah is using them as the means of protecting the Qura’n and thus protecting the religion and the whole of mankind. Deen is only understood by the Qura’n and mankind will only gain salvation through the laws of the Qura’n

 Until today the Quara’n has been preserved word to word by the hafiz. Even the correct recitation of the qura’n according to how Jibreel recited it to the prophet (saw) and he to the companions, has been preserved by the Qurraa (plural of Qari). When all the other books have been edited and changed, the Qura’n is still exactly how it was when it was revealed. Also there isn’t any other book in the world as big as the Qura’n, that could be memorized so easily by so many people. This is one of the great living miracles of the prophet (saw) and the Qura’n and that is only done through the means of a hafiz.

What could be a greater honor and a greater service of deen than to become a hafiz of the qura’n

(weather understood or not) because it is only through the huffaz the Muslims are able to prove the miracle of the qura’n and preserve the Deen. Because Uzair (as) had memorized the Qura’n the

Jews had started to calling him son of God

Just the mere memorization of the qura’n itself is a great virtue and honor. The hafiz deserves respect even if he/she doesn’t understand it. This is why the prophet (saw) and his companions had immense respect and value for a hafiz. The Ahaadeeth about the virtue of a hafiz does not state that one has to understand the Qura’n in order to gain the virtue, yes off course understanding the Qura’n is very important and it is a separate virtue in its own.

Ahaadeeth on the virtue of a hafiz

1.

Ibn Umar(ra) narrated that the Prophet (saw) said : ‘there is no jealousy except in two things;(1) a person whom Allah has given the Qura’n so he is occupied with it all day and all night ,(2) and a person whom

Allah has given wealth so he spends it (in the path of Allah) all day and all night’.

(Agreed upon)

Inb Abbas (ra) narrates that the Holy Prophet(saw) said: ‘ It will be said to the person of the Qura’n : read,

elevate your self ,and read slowly as you used to read in the world, because your final destination in paradise will be at the final verse you recite’. (Abu Dawood)

Ali(ra) reports that the Holy Prophet(saw) said whoever reads the Qura’n and has memorized it, he accepts what is halal in there and accepts what is haram in there Allah will enter him in to paradise and Allah will accept his intercession for ten people of his family upon whom the fire had been made compulsory’

(narrated by Ahmed and Tirmizi(gareeb))

Muaz(ra) narrated that the prophet(saw) said whoever read the Qura’n and acted upon it, his parents will be made to wear such a crown on the Day of Judgment that its radiant will be better than the light of the sun, if it was in your houses. So what do you think about the one who has acted upon it’

(Ahmad and abu Dawood, and hakim authenticated it)

Benefits of memorizing the Qura’n

1.

The heart of the hafiz will be full of noor (light) thus make the heart stronger (not harder), livelier, healthier, and peaceful. It will only be extinguished by sins and evils.

2.

It is a company for a hafiz at all times.

3.

It illuminates the mind and soul

4.

Makes the mind stronger and memory much sharper, thus ones concentration level is increased and one is able to cope with stress and pressure at all walks of life.

5.

Just as one body is made stronger by regular exercise the mind and memory is also made stronger by regular memorization .

6.

If a child memorizes the Quara’n at an early age then it will help him for the rest of his life at all walks of life. It will help him in his future education, religious and secular due to the memory power increasing very much.

Note: What made the great Muslim scholars and doctors of the golden ages of Islam so great, renowned and unique is the fact that all of them had been given good Islamic primary education and most had become hafiz at an early age. Then when they specialized in the different fields they excelled the rest of their counterparts around the world. This is what made them different from the rest of the scholars around the world.

NOOR-UDDEEN TAHFEEZ-UL- QURA’N (NTQ)

Since 2005 NTQ has been running an evening Hifz madrasah at Burdett estate masjid from 5pm to 8pm. Initially the class had started with only 9 students and then progressed to 13 students. With the grace of Allah, by the end of the year, due to the good progress and achievement of the students there were another 14 people on the waiting list, without any advertisement whatsoever. However, due to the lack of space it was not possible to cater for them all.

The following year only five more students were allowed to enroll and another Hafiz teacher was employed to assist for better quality teaching. Now NTQ is hoping to expand and run more evening hifz classes and weekend maktabs at a bigger premise.

Purpose of the name

Noor- Uddeen means the light of Deen and Tahfeez-ul-Qura’n means memorization of the Qura’n. Because the

Qura’n is a light, it is the light of Deen and in this madrasah the Qura’an is studied and memorized, it is named

Noor- Uddeen Tahfeez-Ul-Qura’n.

Another reason for the name is that Noor Uddeen was the name of one of the greatest scholars of the world in recent times, Allamah Noor Uddeen Ghorpuri (ra), who was a great expert of Hadeeth, a great pious and spiritual leader, who has taught Hadeeth for over 50 years to thousands of students in Bangladesh, and had served the

Qura’n and the muslims of Bangladesh all his life. He was an ideal leader who guided and helped the people intellectually, spiritually, politically and economically. He had memorized most of the Qura’n by himself at a very early age and then the rest of his life promoted the importance of the qura’n by teaching it and leading the taraweeh prayer by himself right up to the age of eighty. We want the students to acknowledge the contribution of our pious scholars who have served our country and our fore fathers, love them, appreciate them and have a connection with them. Also we hope that more likes of him will be produced who will serve and lead the Muslims of the world and especially the Muslims of Britain.

Aims and objectives

To provide the opportunity for young boys and girls to complete the memorization of the Qura’n at a young age, while going to local primary schools or secondary schools, without having to make the great sacrifice as leaving home and going to boarding Madrasah or making the financial sacrifice as going to private Muslim schools

The Best age for doing hifz is at a young age, the younger the better. However no Madrasha or Islamic secondary school (unless it’s a Muslim primary school) in the UK will accept anyone below the age of 11 and not many evening maktabs provide the opportunity for hifz. NTQ hopes to revive the old tradition of everyone doing hifz at a very early age so then they can dedicate themselves in whatever field they like, religious and secular and achieve the best results.

We hope to promote the tradition of having hifz facility for young children in our mosques and maktabs.

Alhamdulillah after the success of NTQ now Burdett Estate Mosque has also started running a hifz class and hopefully Landsbury Mosque will be also running a Hifz class soon.

We hope to produce great scholars in our modern world like Imam Shafi, Imam malik, Imam Hasan, Imam azzuhri,

Sheikh Zakariyya and sheikh Noor Uddeen and many many more, who were all hafiz at a very young age. Also we hope to produce great doctors and professors like ibn sina, algazali, alfarabi, alidrisi etc who were also hafiz of the qura’n at young age.

Targets (in how long expected to complete)

In many makaaatib we see that a child after attending for 6-7 years still isn’t able to read the qura’n properly. NTQ hopes to improve the standard of the education in the makaatib.we hope to be able to train a child right from the beginning to be able to recite the qura’n within a year and then move them on to Hifz quickly as possible. If someone already knows how to read then we hope to polish them up and get them ready for hifz within 4-6 months.

The average time for completing hifz in a fulltime boarding institute is 3-4 years. From our experience at NTQ we’ve seen that the average a decent student does is 3 paras in the 1 st

year, 5 paras in the 2 nd,

7 paras in the 3 rd

. that’s 15 paras in 3 years. 9 Paras in the4 th

year. That’s 24 paras in 4 years. Therefore a child will finish easily in 5 years. If a child starts at 6 they will become a hafiz by 11 providing they try hard. Then they can dedicate themselves to the secular education and achieve the highest grades in the UK, thus secure the success of both worlds.

We hope to achieve our aims and goals by firstly implementing a high level of discipline and respect for the teacher, secondly by building a stronger relation between the teachers and students, thirdly by keeping the students standards and expectations high, fourthly by focusing and stressing more on the qura’nic recitation, fifthly engaging the parents to take a big role in helping their children learn, and finally by Bringing onboard qualified, talented and experienced teachers who will be an inspiration for the students, who will hopefully be given a respectable salary for their contribution.

We hope to improve the standard also by monitoring the progress of the students. If the child isn’t progressing according to the standard the parents will be informed and told clearly that the child has to make efforts or other arrangements must be made. If the child is struggling in hifz we will bring this to the attention of the parents at an early age so that parents can decide if they should keep the child in the hifz class or make other arrangements

Staff/Teachers

We hope to employ young English spoken, qualified teachers with experience who can interact with the students and are a role model and inspiration for the students.

Enrolment

For the hifz class there is strict criteria that the child must be able to read the qura’n fluently with correct tajweed.

For the pre- hifz class there is a lot more flexibility.

Our enrolment policy is based on selection rather than first come first service. We give more priority to girls, younger age and whose recitation is better. We also consider the child’s behavior, commitment as well as the parent’s commitment

Trial period

The first three months is a trial period. After one month we will give the parents an update on the child’s progress.

If the child isn’t doing well we will give another 2 months time so that the parents could encourage the child to work harder. If there isn’t still any progress we will contact the parents and make other arrangements.

Behavior policy

Must respect the teachers

Must never talk back to the teachers and argue. If the teacher has made a mistake they should keep quite and privately indicate to the teacher their mistake

Must not disrupt the class, talk while the teacher is talking.

Must respect all the other students and be considerate to one another

Must not bully or make fun of others

Must respect the premises and everything that belongs to it.

Must respect the rules and policies and abide by them.

Must not waste time in the class or talk unless the teacher has given permission.

Must meet all the targets and tasks set out by the teacher to the best of ones ability

Note: due to bad behavior various disciplinary steps will be taken. If it persists the parents will be called. Only three warnings will be given and then suspended or expelled. If one is suspended thrice, the forth time they will be expelled. If any serious crime has been caused like, damaging property, fighting, rebelling with teachers then the child will be suspended without the three chances.

Parent’s contribution

Just by sending the child to the madrasah does not fulfill the parent’s responsibility to the children’s education. The children are young they can not be responsible to sit and study by themselves punctually, the parents must monitor them.

Parents must make sure the child is doing the home work regularly and properly.

The parents must keep a close communication with the teacher and enquire of the child’s progress.

 The parents must sign the child’s diary to prove that the child has sat down to read.

 It would be very helpful if parents would also listen what they’ve learned or ask everyday how they did today. It only takes 5 min to listen, no need to be a hafiz.

The parents must never complain or criticize the teachers in front of the children as it will make them loose respect and love for their teachers, thus the child will loose out. If there is an issue or shortcoming of the teacher, the parents should approach them and speak politely.

The parents should always encourage the children to love, respect and serve the teachers just as the teachers always encourage the children to love, respect and serve their parents.

The parents must co-operate and work with the teacher for their education and discipline.

Parents must always encourage, motivate and push the children and never be content with their achievement. Also they shouldn’t always over praise them as it often deceives the child.

Must make sure they always pay the fee on time, to help the madrasah run smoothly and allow the their children to be taught with a peace of mind. Due to the negligence of parents in paying the fee the child looses out.

Uniform

Boys: black or navy Islamic traditional clothing with white hat. The trousers must be above the ankles and the shirt must be below the knee.

Girls: black or navy blue jilbab with any colored scarf. The jilbab must not be tight fitting.
