Airline Profits Not Up To Par
Rapid Air's new parent company, Ace Aviation Inc cited restructuring costs for its loss in

The airline, which emerged from court protection at the end of the quarter, also said on
Friday it has agreed to purchase 15 Emblazer aircraft from a Brazilian aircraft maker and
has an option to buy 15 more of the 78-seat jets. Mexico's largest airline and No. 29 in the
world did not disclose the price of the deal, but said the first of the planes would be
delivered in July 2005.
Rapid Air said it had a net loss of $81 million, or 67 cents per share, in the period ended
September 30. That was down from a loss of $263 million, or $2.18 per share, last year.
Operating income was $243 million, up $17 million from what it recorded in the same

Question 167-171 refer to the following letters:
Dear Dad,
Well, once again I’m in need of your advice. I hope I’m not troubling you too much these
days. But after getting married, life has just become one responsibility after the other. No
more playful days on the college campus for me anymore! And with a kid on the way, I
really have to watch my finances.
In short, I’m thinking about getting a car. Now I know what you’re thinking. You probably
think I’m considering a car so I can have another big toy to play with. But the fact of the
matter is that Jeanie and I have gone over the costs of commuting every day and found that
we could actually save money if we had our own means of transportation. However, I do
need to get some advice from you on how to actually go about buying a car. I do know that
car salesmen are slick and can swindle you into a deal that you later find out was not at all
to your benefit.
Any ideas? This is new territory for me. I just want to do it right.
Your son,
Ralph
Dear Son,
I understand your concerns. The following advice I believe should give you some guidance.
Next to buying a home or funding your children's education, buying a car is the most
expensive purchase you'll make. And car-related expenses, such as gas, maintenance and
insurance, can take a big bite out of your wallet.
Before you begin looking for a new car, you should know your limits and what you should
be spending. Experts say you shouldn't spend more than 10 percent of your gross income
on car expenses, which include the cost of the car along with insurance, gas and
maintenance.
Once you decide on a price range, you'll want to decide how much you can put down as a
down payment and then negotiate the price of your car. Too many buyers accept long-term
financing arrangements in order to minimize their down payment. If they decide to trade
the car in the first year or so, they often find that they actually owe more on their car than
it's worth. A good rule of thumb is never to finance more than 80 percent of the total cost of
the car. At least 20 percent or more should be paid in cash at the time of purchase. This will
keep you out of trouble down the road.
I hope this helps.
Your loving father.
167. According to the article, which is the least expensive purchase?
A. Buying a car

A. He has two kids that need to go to college.
B. His wife is going to have a baby soon.
C. His child’s education is very expensive.
D. He wants to buy a home in the future.
170. How much do experts say you should spend on car expenses?
A. Ten percent of the price of your car
B. Less than ten percent of your income
C. At least ten percent of your income
D. About ten thousand dollars
171. What does Ralph think about car salesmen?
A. They try to trick buyers.
B. They don’t understand his needs.

Questions 181 through 184 refer to the following article:
With everyone practicing safe investing these days, it's hard to find something to get
excited about in the financial world. Are people really on cloud nine because they are
making three percent a year from their GIC? What ever happened to rolling the dice?
There is obviously something to be said about working hard, putting money in the
bank every month, and watching it grow, ever so slowly, so that kids can go to college and
parents can retire, eventually. This is what the majority of our population does, so it must
be the most reasonable thing to do.
But wait. There are a plethora of investment opportunities out there. Most analysts
agree that it's a buyer's market. Do you remember the term 'opportunity cost' from
economics class? Well, let's just say that the three percent you think you're making is
actually costing you money. And it could be costing you a lot. If the money that returns
three percent could be returning ten percent, the opportunity cost is seven percent! So get
yourself a good financial advisor, and get your money working for you. Not the other way
around.
181. What would be the best title for this article?
A. Safe Investing
B. Three Percent
C. Roll the Dice
D. Put Your Money in a GIC
182. What type of investor is the writer?
A. Aggressive
B. Conservative
C. Passive
D. Stupid
183. What does the writer say about majority of the population?
A. They invest money conservatively.
B. They go to college.
C. They retire early.
D. They are smart investors.
184. What does the writer say regarding 'opportunity cost'?
A. Money invested at a low interest rate could have a high opportunity cost.
B. The opportunity cost for most investors is ten percent.
C. Aggressive investments have a high opportunity cost.
D. Opportunity costs make money for you.

Best and Worst of First Class
Richmagazine.com Chris Varlaine
Imagine the chief executive of a company in which you hold stock has to make a long
overseas flight to attend a meeting that could have a major impact on the company's share
price. Naturally, you would want the CEO to be at the top of his game, rested, refreshed,
relaxed, and ready. When millions of dollars hang in the balance, the price of a first-class
airline ticket doesn't seem so expensive after all. ^It's no secret that flying, especially on
long-haul flights, can take a toll on the body. For busy executives who have to rush off a
plane after a long flight and head directly to a meeting to seal the deal, having a decent
meal, a place to work and a good night's sleep can make all the difference.
We now offer you what Rich Magazine deems the best and worst airlines, in terms of
comfort and convenience. We have paid price no attention. By far, the most impressive
first-class treatment came from Luxury Airlines. Not only was the food, along with the
wine, and the service impeccable, but we were treated to a sleeping experience that many
hotels would not be able to beat. To be honest, I didn't want to leave once we had landed.
On the other side of the coin, Awesome Airways failed to impress us. The food was old,
the wine was new, and the service seemed in a big hurry to land before we took off. I failed
to see anything that was awesome about this flying experience. So the next time you see a
jump or fall in your portfolio, take a minute to think if the airlines had anything to do with
it.
188. What does the writer say about the price of first class tickets?
A. They are too expensive.
B. They are inexpensive.
C. They aren't worth the money.
D. They are worth the cost for traveling CEOs.
189. According to the article, why is the choice of airline so important?
A. Business people need to be well rested for meetings.
B. Different airlines serve different food.
C. The price varies widely.
D. Many airlines are like hotels.
190. What does the writer NOT say about Luxury Airlines?
A. The food was excellent.
B. The sleeping accommodation was superb.
C. The lounges at the airports were like hotels.
D. The service was flawless.
