TEACHING METHODS:
1. Lectures/Demonstrations: Part of each class will be used to highlight the important
material within each Chapter using interactive discussions, group work, handouts,
lectures, and computer demos.
2. Labs: Part of the class is dedicated to hands-on learning, facilitated by the instructor. You
will work at your own pace during this portion of the class to solidify the lesson material or
to begin work on the weekly projects.
3. Projects: Each project consists of four parts: the Skills Review, two Project Builders, one
Design Project and one Group project from the end of the Chapter discussed during that
section. Projects that correlate to the Chapters will be assigned throughout the course.
Additional Projects and/or a final project will be given.
4. Quizzes: Hands-on quizzes will be given. Quiz exercises are pulled from each chapter’s
Skills Review.
GRADING POLICY:
A combination of lecture, demonstration, quizzes, homework, classroom exercises, projects, and
tests will be used in this class. At CSI, it is assumed that there are two hours of homework
required for each hour of class time. While a limited amount of time will be available during
class time, students should plan to spend at least two hours of homework for each hour of
lecture. This may be done on a home computer or can be completed during any hours the
computer classroom is open. A trial copy of the software is included with the textbook, but
students should note that it is NOT usable for more than 30 days. Therefore, it is recommended
that you NOT load this software on your computer until 25-30 days prior to finals week.
If a computer is available during another instructor’s class time, you may ask that instructor
(outside of class and ahead of time) if you could work quietly at that computer. Access to extra
classroom computers is totally up to the instructor teaching in that classroom. It should be
clearly understood that even if you have permission to work in the classroom, there should be
NO printing during the class time and no talking during the class time.
Assigned Points:
There will be homework points for each chapter, there will be quizzes, there will be additional
projects, there will be a final written test, and there will be a final project. Students need to
maintain the following average for each grade.
90-100 = A;
80-89 = B; 70-79 = C; 60-69 = D <60 = F
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
Missed Classes: Due to the nature of this class, it is strongly suggested that students be in class
EVERY class period. However, if you miss a class, you are responsible for obtaining material,
which may have been distributed on class days when you were absent. If you register on
Blackboard for this class, when possible, the instructor will send you an email to let you know
what you missed in class. However, it will be your responsibility to acquire this information if you
do not receive an email. If you rely on other students to find out what you missed, you may not
get all the information. Missed or late quizzes cannot be made up under any circumstances but,
with good cause and adequate notice, an early quiz may be given. Cell phones must be turned
off at all times when student is in the classroom. NO EXCEPTIONS!
1. Assignments: All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due. If the
assignment is turned in at the end of the class, it will be considered one day late. Late
submission of assignments will be assessed a penalty of 10% per day. No exceptions are
made. If you plan to miss a class period, get your assignment done ahead of time to avoid
this penalty. If you are ill and IF you called the instructor before the class, assignments can
be made up, but must be turned in within one class period of the due date. Please arrange at
the beginning of the semester to have someone take notes for you if you are not in class. If
you do this, when the instructor announces that you are gone, your notetaker should
automatically plan to take notes for you.
2. Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and may be punished
by failure on exam, paper or project; or failure in the course.
3. Need for Assistance: If you have any condition, such as a physical or learning disability,
which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as I have outlined it, or which will
require academic accommodations, see the Disabilities section below.
4. If you complete a few assignments and attend several classes, I will not drop you from the
class if you stop showing. It will be your responsibility to complete the drop slip and get it
turned in. Failure to do so may result in an F.
OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT:
Outcome:
Assessment:
To master course content as presented in the series of learner objectives given
to the student.
Students shall complete weekly assignments, lab activities, quizzes, and
projects to reinforce course concepts and applications. Quizzes, tests, and
projects serve to validate the mastery of course objectives.
Outcome:
Assessment:
To understand the practical use of the page layout and design programs.
Students will use the internet/textbooks to find practical applications
for page layout.
Outcome:
Assessment:
To use PageMaker and/or Adobe InDesign in practical applications.
Students will complete assignments from the textbooks and teacherassigned projects with a 70% or better to effectively demonstrate their
skill in using the appropriate software in practical applications.
Outcome:
To understand the strengths and weaknesses of the software packages used in
this classroom and how they can be used in everyday situations. Students and
the instructor will use the internet, research trade magazines, and discuss
strengths and weaknesses of the software packages in class to expand the
student’s knowledge of the software.
Students will complete a teacher assigned project with a 70% or better
to effectively demonstrate their knowledge in this area.
Assessment:
Outcome:
Assessment:
The instructor will be actively involved with the students to most effectively
deliver the course content.
Classroom assessment activities and evaluations will be incorporated to
determine the degree to which students are learning and which
instructional resources are most effective for students.
EVALUATIONS:
Students are strongly encouraged to complete evaluations at the end of the course. Evaluations
are very important to assist the teaching staff to continually improve the course. Evaluations are
available online at http://evaluation.csi.edu. Evaluations open up two weeks prior to the end of
the course. The last day to complete an evaluation is the last day of the course. During the
time the evaluations are open, students can complete the course evaluations at their
convenience from any computer with Internet access, including in the open lab in the Library and
in the SUB. When students log in, they should see the evaluations for the courses in which they
are enrolled. Evaluations are anonymous. Filling out the evaluation should only take a few
minutes. Your honest feedback is greatly appreciated.
Instructors use these evaluations to improve upon the course, the facilities, the textbooks, and
the instruction. If there is something you feel needs to be corrected for the class as a whole,
indicate this. If there is something you feel should continue to be retained in the course, please
indicate this. If there is an equipment issue, a software issue, a textbook issue, etc., please
indicate this.
DISABILITIES:
Any student with a documented disability may be eligible for related accommodations. To
determine eligibility and secure services, students should contact the coordinator of Disability
Services at their first opportunity after registration for a class. Student Disability Services is
located on the second floor of the Taylor Building on the Twin Falls Campus.. 208-732-6250
(voice) or 208-734-9929 (TTY), or email aflannery@csi.edu.
COURSE TOPICAL OUTLINE: TENTATIVE Schedule for Fall 2006
Following is a TENTATIVE weekly schedule of material covered in this class. However, the weeks may be changed in order to fit
additional projects or to accommodate the final project. Due Dates will be given each class period so the student can fill in the
appropriate due date at that time. ALL files must be saved to your network drive. You must create a directory off the root of your
network drive and name it: INFT286. Then, if you are asked to put it in a subdirectory, be sure that goes under the INFT286
directory—even if you also plan to put it on your Flash drive or a CD. The file (s) MUST be in that directory by the assigned date or
they will NOT be counted. Occasionally you may be asked to print a file.
