1,500 gather to remember three Navy fliers killed at sea
A Memorial Service was held on Thursday August 23, 2007 for the missing crew of the
U.S. Navy E-2C Hawkeye, which included Lt. Jerry R. Smith (KP ’03).
Attached is the Virginia Pilot article concerning the memorial service.
http://content.hamptonroads.com/story.cfm?story=130940&ran=2932
According to Mike Van Straten (KP '89) and Sandra L. Good (KP ’97) of the USMMA-AF Hampton
Roads Chapter, the memorial service was very well attended. Attending on behalf of the USMMA
Alumni Foundation also were Jack Goode '99, Matt Denning '98 and John Gossner '59 of the
Hampton Roads Chapter. John Horn (KP '03) a VAW-120 squadron mate of Jerry's eulogized Jerry
during the service.
The memorial service was held on base (Naval Station Norfolk) at the David Adams Memorial Chapel
from 1300-1430. There was a reception following from 1500-1545 at the Officers' Club. The USMMA
flag was displayed prominently at the entrance to the chapel.
The following article details this tragic accident that took the life of our esteemed alumnus.
LTJG JERRY SMITH '03 KILLED IN PLANE CRASH August 20, 2007

Navy identifies 3 presumed dead in Hawkeye crash
10:35 PM EDT on Friday, August 17, 2007, Associated Press & 13News, From U.S. Navy
Lt. Cameron Hall, Lt. Ryan Betton, Lt Junior Grade Jerry Smith
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The Navy ended the search Friday for three aviators missing since their Navy
twin-engine radar plane crashed off North Carolina's coast Wednesday night.
"The search has been terminated," said Mike Maus, a spokesman with the Norfolk-based Atlantic
Fleet Naval Air Force. "They did find some debris." Friday afternoon the crewmembers were
identified as Lt. Cameron Hall, 30, Lt. Ryan Betton, 31, and Lt. Junior Grade Jerry Smith, 25.
According to the Navy, Hall was a Naval Flight Officer and instructor. Betton, a pilot, was also an
instructor. Smith, a pilot, has been a student since June of 2006.
An active duty member of the Navy said Lt. Junior Grade Smith was more than likely flying the
Hawkeye with either Hall or Betton at his side. Whoever wasn't next to Smith would have been in the
back of the plane on Firewatch, looking for trouble outside.

Retired E-2C Hawkeye pilot, Captain Ralph "Ricky" Ricardo of Virginia Beach had been hoping for
the best, but bracing for the worst.
"There are no finer people than a Navy air crew and especially in the Hawkeye-Greyhound
community,” said Ricardo. “And it's a sad thing."
The E-2C Hawkeye turbo prop plane had just launched from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman
when it went down into the Atlantic Ocean in clear weather about 11 p.m. Wednesday. The Norfolkbased carrier was about 150 miles southeast of the Virginia Capes, where the Atlantic and the
Chesapeake Bay meet. The plane was doing carrier qualification exercises, which involves taking off
and landing on a carrier deck.
The plane is from Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 120, based at Norfolk Naval Station.
The E-2C Hawkeye, distinguished by a giant radar dome mounted atop it, is used for airborne
command, control and early warning. It normally carries a crew of five but a full crew is not needed for
carrier qualifications.
Each aviator had survival gear, Maus said, including a vest with a flotation device that inflates
automatically when it comes in contact with salt water, an emergency radio, a signal flare and a
whistle. The plane also carries life rafts and parachutes.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.

Kings Point Graduate Becomes New Head of the Department of Engineering
August 22, 2007
http://www.usmmaaa.com/cgi-any/newspages.dll/pages?sitename=USMMA&record=2415&htmlfile=newspages3_photo.htm
Dr. David Palmer (KP ’91) will be the new Head of the Engineering Department. Dr. Palmer will begin
his three year term when Prof. Jose Femenia, the current Department Head, steps down on August
31, 2007. The appointment was made after a lengthy internal search that attracted five exceptional
applicants with strong credentials, and outstanding academic and professional backgrounds.
Dr. David J. Palmer is currently an Assistant Academic Dean and an Associate Professor of
Engineering at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, one of the five federal academies. He
earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Marine Engineering Systems from the United States
Merchant Marine Academy; a Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Brooklyn
Polytechnic University and a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering, from Polytechnic University,
concentrating in Thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, Heat Transfer and Engineering Management. His
dissertation entitled A Combined Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactor and Fuel Cell Cycle dealt with a
combined cycle marine engineering propulsion system which allowed him to further specialize in
marine engineering, gas cooled nuclear reactors and solid oxide fuel cells.
Dr. Palmer is also a graduate of the United States Navy's Nuclear Power Program, where he was
certified as an Engineering Officer of the Watch, Nuclear Plant Engineer and senior Engineering Duty
Officer. Dr. Palmer used these certifications during his employment with General Electric's Knolls
Atomic Power Laboratory where he had the responsibility of training and certifying Navy personnel in
the operation of Nuclear Power for our nation's submarines and aircraft carriers. His position as
Nuclear Engineering Officer of the Watch and Nuclear Plant Engineer permitted him not only to be a
member on the watch team operating a nuclear reactor and an entire marine propulsion plant, but
also to lead as the senior member of the team with overall responsibility of overseeing the nuclear
reactor and marine propulsion plant.
At the Academy, Professor Palmer held many responsibilities within the Academic Division in areas
such as the budget, strategic planning, United States Coast Guard, Middle States, STCW and
Academic Review Boards. He participated and assisted in several Middle States, STCW and ABET
audits and was a key player in a major reengineering effort to convert the Academy's curriculum from
a quarter to a tri-semester system. Further, he lead an ongoing budget plan to refurbish and upgrade
the Academy's many laboratories, simulators and classrooms to meet the needs and standards of the
21st century.
Dr. Palmer is a Commander in the United States Navy Reserve where he held several positions in the
Selective Reserve with the Naval Control and Guidance of Shipping. He is currently a Commander in
the Merchant Marine Individual Ready Reserve and holds a current STCW-95 United
States Coast Guard Engineer's license. Further, he is on the Board of Directors for the Global
Maritime and Transportation School and is an active member on many other committees throughout
the academy including the Academic Board, Strategic Planning Committee, Master Plan Committee
and the STCW Committee.
Professor Palmer is a recipient of the MARAD Star for Extraordinary Contribution and the Federal
Executive Board Employee of the Year Award. Dr. Palmer and his wife, Lisa, are the parents of three
children, Marisa Ann, Allison Nicole, and Scott David. They reside on Long Island.
