DISCUSSION
ACTION
 Deirdre Kleske led introductions.
 Melanie explained that the Youth Engagement & Action for
Health (YEAH!) is the only direct service programming
that the COI provides. Currently, four YEAH! groups are
being led by graduate students of the SDSU School of
Public Health. A San Ysidro High School group
discussed menu changes in the school cafeteria with some
of the district’s faculty; they agreed to begin using wheat
tortillas instead of white tortillas on their breakfast menu.
The group also test tasted food from a food services
company called Green Bellies, which specializes in
organic foods. Paige Metz mentioned that National
School District has been considering this company as
well. Another YEAH! group at San Ysidro Middle School
is working on a project to add a water fountain and to
incorporate Peaceful Playgrounds techniques, a program

that promotes safe places/practices for physical activity.
 Nursing students from Cal State University, San Marcos are
working on YEAH! via Healthy Works. As part of their
project, they conducted blood glucose screenings and
took BMI measurements at San Marcos Elementary
School. 52% of students were found to be overweight or
obese.
 Adopting California Education Standards for Physical
Activity and Nutrition is an additional project that
YEAH! groups are working on.
 The Navy Child and Youth Services will run YMCA
summer programs in National City and Linda Vista as a
YEAH! project.
 YEAH! must complete 12 projects by the end of the
calendar year, so anyone with a possible youth
group/project leader is encouraged to contact Melanie.
 Parent Engagement Trainings aim to increase parent support
for school wellness policies. Leading these efforts is
Deirdre Kleske; she reported that there has not been much
activity lately on this work plan but trainings can be
organized as needed. The training model engages school
staff to work with the parents to learn more about
wellness.
 JuliAnna Arnett, the Healthy Works Food Policy Manager,
described the Farm to School Taskforce, a group that is
coordinated by representatives from Whole Foods, Tierra
Miguel Farm, and San Diego Unified School District.
Stakeholders in food services and other interested parties
meet at Stone Brewery to discuss food procurement and
wellness policy recommendations, which include
supporting local foods on school menus as part of the
School Lunch program. Currently, there are six active
Farm-to-School programs, and thirteen school districts

Walk to School and Safe Routes to School.
 Deirdre announced that Darcy O’Keefe will make a
presentation in June on the After School Resource
Directory being put together by Region 9 Technical
Assistance Center (RTAC), a department of SDCOE.
 A new cross domain project brings together leads from the

engage medical professionals in school and preschool
wellness. The Medical Professionals Engagement project
will provide a Menu of Options describing ways to get
involved, from small (“appetizers”) and medium
(“entrees”) to high involvement (“dessert”) activities.
There was a discussion of activities to include, as well as
the types of medical professionals to target. It was agreed
that the list should be kept short and simple, and a variety
of medical professionals should be encouraged to get
involved. Erica suggested reaching out to mental health
professionals. Dentists, dieticians, and retired medical
professionals were also mentioned, as well as the idea of
giving recognition to involved professionals.
