Name:
PLANT STRUCTURE LAB
Purpose: To observe the anatomy of various plant structures
Materials: Microscope, Prepared slides, Colored pencils
Procedure: Examine slides on medium power.
Observations:
1) Draw a diagram of the leaf cross section: label the epidermis, palisade layer, spongy
layer, stomates, guard cells, vascular bundles.
2) Draw a diagram of the monocot stem: label the vascular bundles.
3) Draw a diagram of the dicot stem: label the vascular bundles.
4) Draw a diagram of the monocot root: label the xylem and phloem.
5) Draw a diagram of the dicot root: label the xylem and phloem
All diagrams should be drawn in circles on white paper. Labels should be drawn neatly
with straight arrows/lines. Indicate the size of the vascular bundles in micrometers and
millimeters on all slides.

Conclusion questions:
1) What is the function of xylem and phloem? What human structures would you
compare them to?
2) Why is it beneficial to have the palisade layer on top?
3) What is the function of guard cells?
4) Why is it beneficial to have the stomates on the bottom of the leaf?
5) What is photosynthesis? Write the equation.
6) Name 3 differences between a monocot and a dicot.
7) What is the function of the roots?
8) What are the 3 zones of a root?
9) What is the purpose of the stem?
10) What are lenticles?
