Site discusses the variety and complexity of change in technical formats. Look up the file type
.doc, .jpeg or .pdf. For example, according to this one source, there are currently over 3000
different digital file formats in existence. And that number does NOT take into account the
various “flavors” of the same file format. It counts .DOC one time – even though MSWord
documents created 10 years ago are different from MSWord documents created today.

In January 2007 representatives of four preservation organizations convened at the Center for
Research Libraries in Chicago to seek consensus on core criteria for digital preservation
repositories, to guide further international efforts on auditing and certifying repositories. The
organizations were: The Digital Curation Center (U.K); DigitalPreservationEurope; NESTOR
(Germany) and Center for Research Libraries (North America). Ongoing work is coordinated in
the U.S. by the Center for Research Libraries.

The report of a NHPRC-sponsored project conducted jointly by SUNY's Center for Technology in
Government and the New York State Archives and Records Administration. The project was
designed to try and develop a practical way to incorporate electronic records requirements into
the design of new information systems, with the emphasis on practical tools. One of the project's
