Required textbook: Mathematical Ideas by Miller, Heeren, Hornsby, 11th Edition.

Course Description: This course is an introductory mathematics course for early childhood education majors. The
course will emphasize the understanding and use of the major concepts of numbers and operations. As a general
theme, strategies of problem solving will be used and discussed in the context of various topics.
Course Objectives:
 Become familiar with inductive reasoning, pattern recognition, and problem-solving techniques.
 Use the notations and operations of set theory.
 Apply arithmetic, geometric, higher-order thinking, and statistical methods to modeling and solving realworld situations.
Prerequisite: MATH 1001 or MATH 1101 or MATH 1111 or MATH 1113.
Attendance: Statistical studies have shown there is a large positive correlation between coming to class and high
grades. Be here! Read first, listen to lecture, participate in any in-class activities, try the homework and check your
work during the in-class problem sessions. Note that early non-attendance jeopardizes the receipt of financial aid.
Do not miss an exam except due to uncontrollable circumstances and alert me to this immediately and prior to exam
time.
Exams and Grading: There will be 4 regular exams and a final exam. Each will be worth 20% of your grade. The
final exam will be cumulative. Exams will mimic the assigned homework problems. 90%+ is an A; 80% to < 90% a
B; 70% to <80% a C; 60% to <70% a D; and below 60% an F.
Makeup Work: In the event of an absence from a test day, proper documentation of your excuse must be produced.
Makeups are likely to be harder since you have had more time to study.
ADA: Every attempt will be made to assist students with physical or learning impairments that have been
documented with a letter from AASU’s Director of Disabilities Services.
Getting Help: There is a mathematics tutorial lab available to you in Solms Hall 206. Please visit it (most mornings,
some evenings--even Sundays, usually).
Cheating: Do your own work on the in-class tests. Violators are brought to AASU’s Honors Court. An ‘F’ will be
assigned as your course grade.
