(a complete video will be ready soon!)
These are three of the "Letters to God" that our
first graders shared with parents, grandparents,
and special friends at a very special ceremony on
Thursday called "Partners with God."
"Partners with God was an important part of the
first grade curriculum at our Skokie School," said
Linda Foster as she welcomed everyone. "Every year
I looked forward to this ceremony and I am so
proud of how our first grade team has collaborated
together and with our students to offer this
wonderful ceremony this year at our Sager School."
"This is one of the first steps on your children's
spiritual and educational journey with God," she
added. "My hope is that they continue to explore
their relationship with God throughout their years
at Solomon Schechter. And may this relationship
be a source of strength and comfort to them and to
your family."

3rd Grade
Sixty-eight eighth graders and their chaperones arrived safely in
Israel early Thursday morning and began their 12 day
experience in Israel. Following their arrival, they went right to
Neot Kedumim, the biblical landscape reserve in Israel that
recreates the physical setting from the days of the bible. They
planted trees before traveling south to Beer Sheva where they
will spend the night in Sde Boker. On Friday, they will visit the
Negev and see David Ben-Gurion's Tomb and hike in Ein Avdat,
a desert canyon with a series of water springs and an
abundance of wildlife. They will drive to Mitzpe Ramon, where
they will get ready for peaceful Shabbat.

Wednesday Morning Bagel Breakfast Raises
Dollars for Service Projects in Israel
Every Wednesday morning following Tefillah, our 8th graders
have been getting together in the upstairs Beit Knesset to eat
bagels, shmooze, and relax before starting their day. In addition
to this time together as a community, the students raised money
for their service projects in Israel. This year, thanks to sales
from the breakfast, they raised $1,718. This money will be
donated to two soup kitchens in Israel, where the students will
be volunteering during their Israel trip.

Graders celebrate Lag B'Omer Israeli style
Roasting potatoes, dancing around a bonfire, playing games, it's
all how the third and fourth grade celebrated the wonderful and
joyful holiday of Lag B'Omer. Kids brought raw potatoes from
home, which we roasted in a big bonfire into a great, yummy
snack to eat. While the hot
potatoes were roasting, the
grade happily danced around
the burning bonfire.
Rabbi Rosenberg told us all
about the fantastic holiday of
Lag B'Omer, and how we
remember Rabbi Simeon Bar
Yochai. He was one of the most
important students of Rabbi
Akiva. Next, we had a leg to
leg, arm to arm game, where
everyone was paired up with a
partner to have a competitive
match of tug of war. Everyone
cheered; the roasted potatoes
were done roasting! With a little
bit of salt and pepper, the potatoes tasted spectacular! As we
concluded our fantastic celebration of Lag B'Omer, we did not
want to go, but we knew that we had a wonderful time and we
are already looking forward to next year's celebration!

Sager Solomon Schechter Fifth Graders
Hold Maccabi Games
Sager Solomon Schechter fifth graders didn't have to travel to
Israel to participate in the Maccabi games. To celebrate Lag
B'Omer, they had their very own Maccabi games right on the
Sager field. Students were divided into several color groups
based on different Israeli soccer teams. They participated in
three major games -- Capture the Flag, Steal the Bagel, and
Machanayim (an Israeli version of dodgeball). At the end of the
Maccabi games, all of the students participated in tug of war. "It
was a wonderful opportunity to not only celebrate Lag B'Omer
but also to see our students cooperating and having so much
fun as a fifth grade community," said Sager teacher Irit Alkalay.

Dr. Gary Kirshenbaum Presents a
Bucket of Organs to Sager Scientists
How many of us can say we have had the chance to see a
"bucket of organs" up close? Our eighth graders can, thanks to
a special visit with Dr. Gary Kirshenbaum, a pathologist and
the husband of Joanne, our school nurse, and the father of
alumni, Jordy, Elana, and Eric.
"Dr. Kirshenbaum has been visiting our eighth grade science
class for may years, and captivates our students during our biochem unit," said science teacher Diane Opensky.
During the visit, Dr. Kirshenbaum not only explained his
profession, he also described why it is important for students to
make good choices regarding their health and how these
choices impact their bodies. He showed them organs that were
healthy and some that were diseased due to diet, lack of
exercise, smoking, drinking (alcohol), drugs, and sexual
activity. He explained the functions of these organs and
repeated:
"If you want to get lung cancer, then all you have to do is
smoke!" "If you want to have heart disease, then eat junk food
and sit around and watch television."
Some students were so inspired by his visit that they said they
wanted to pursue a career in medicine or scientific research. All
of the students were excited about science. "We want our
students to leave Schechter excited and enthusiastic about
science as they enter high school," said Mrs. Opensky.
A very special thank you to Dr. Kirshenbaum for this annual
visit!
Chicago Tribune Editorial Cartoonist
Visits Sager Solomon Schechter
Scott Stantis, editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune,
made a special appearance at Sager Solomon Schechter to
speak with our fifth graders about his work. The students had
just finished a month-long study of editorial cartoons as part of
their current events unit. In preparation for the visit, they looked
at dozens of editorial cartoons and learned how to analyze the
content.
Scott brought many of his cartoons and discussed both the
drawings and the ideas behind them. He also demonstrated the
process that he used when drawing caricatures by drawing a
picture of fifth grade teacher Susan Agate saying "No more
homework." He also drew a student but did not tell the group
who he was drawing. They kept guessing until he finished and
many students had determined who he was drawing (see
photo).
"Our students had the opportunity to ask questions and to hear
Scott describe how he became a cartoonist," said Susan
Agate. "He said he always loved drawing and that when he was
a freshman in college he started drawing cartoons for the school
newspaper and never stopped. They were amazed to hear that
Scott draws more than 700 cartoons a year. We are thrilled that
we were able to welcome Scott to our classroom and to provide
students with a first-hand look at what is involved in being a
cartoonist!"

60 Parents and Children Gather At
Solomon Schechter Early Childhood Center
For a "Paint and Play" Family NIght
Paint, brushes, tin cans, boxes, paper, recycled items, colored
tape and clay were the
materials that we used at the
ECC on Family Material
Night. This family event
brought more than 60 parents
and children together to paint,
shape clay and create with
tape. From an educational
perspective it was a "brainfilled" night with fine motor
skills, eye-hand coordination,
critical thinking skills, creative
skills and social skills all at
work. The evidence of our
children's aesthetic sense
was obvious in all of the
created works. At the end of
the evening, as families
carried their creations out of
the building, we were excited to discover that we used almost
25 pounds of clay and lots of tape, paint and paper!
Solomon Schechter Early Childhood Center
Alonim Students Use Beads to
Create
Beautiful Mobiles
This week in the Alonim classroom at Solomon Schechter
Early Childhood Center, our students were very interested in
beading. Using both wire
and string, the Alonim
made mobiles to
decorate our classroom
as well as to take home.
In addition to beads, the
students used old keys
and sticks which they
covered with brightly
colored paint. Using these
varied materials together
they created mobiles that
were natural, colorful and
unique.
"Exploring beads is a
great way to improve fine
motor skills," said Alonin
teacher Rachel
Sonenthal. "In addition,
when we give the
students the opportunity
to decide how to decorate our environment they feel more
ownership over the classroom."
A Schechter Shining Moment
by Jen Dunitz-Geiringer
Schechter mom of Jake, fourth
grade, and Catie, first grade
In the wake of so much tragedy in
the news lately, it can be utterly
impossible to find sources of
spirituality and beauty. However,
sitting at the Partners with God
ceremony this morning and listening
to 60 first graders describe their relationship with God proved to
be the perfect antidote to that negativity. Each child sang,
danced, laughed, and then, with far more poise and grace than
most adults, stood up before a crowded room and read their
personal, heartfelt letter to God.
Jen is pictured above with her husband, John, and Catie
Some children asked God questions, some children offered God
thanks, and some children described their relationship with God.
The common theme of all of the letters and each of the readers
was that they shined with a pride of who they are as the future
of our Jewish people, and they radiated with a sincere love of
God.
Many of us spend
countless hours
searching for meaning
and searching for God.
As it turns out, the
answer to the question
of "where is God"
needn't send us on a
long, soul-searching
quest. The answer is
often standing right in
front of us, holding a
small pink flower and
glowing with a joyful,
toothless grin.
Catie, far right, with
Madison Herz and
Rachel Rose.
Alumni News
Elana Kirshenbaum (SSDS '98)
If you knew Elana Kirshenbaum (SSDS '98) as a child, you
know she has always loved animals and originally wanted to
become a veterinarian. She has owned animals most of her life:
a guinea pig named Snowflake when she was four years old, a
few frogs, newts, fish, a turtle, and a few birds. In addition, her
family bought a ball python for her class at Solomon
Schechter.
Elana got her first dog,
Cubbie, for her 10th
birthday. She now owns
two dogs -- a lasa apso
poodle named Gracie,
almost 9 years old, and
a shi tzu poodle named
Payton, almost 3 years
old.
After graduating from
Highland Park High
School where she was
on the Jammers dance
team and played
lacrosse, Elana started
her pre-vet studies in
animal sciences at
University of Iowa. Soon
Elana discovered that
she was also interested
in working with people. She also wanted more of a diverse
environment and more of a challenge. She transferred to
George Washington University and majored in Psychology.
Once out of college, Elana picked up her interest in animals
again and obtained a Certificate in Dog Training at Animal
Behavior College. It was an intense 14-month program where
she was paired up with a local dog trainer who mentored her.
After she completed that certificate, she obtained her Master's in
Social Work at Loyola University. She became a therapist for
foster children for a few years. She discovered that she really
missed working with animals though, and decided to combine
her love of animals with her love of helping people and founded
Full Package Pups, a dog training and consulting service.
In her business, Elana provides a variety of services to
families that are considering bringing a dog into their home.
She discusses why they want a dog, explains the financial
responsibilities, and discusss what breeds fit their lifestyle.
She explores the options of buying from a breeder versus
adopting a dog from a rescue. She also teaches them how to
pick a dog and guides them through the process of puppy
proofing. Elana also can train the dogs and offers dog walking
services. Her business is based in Chicago and she offers
training and consulting services throughout the Chicagoland
area. She offers dog-walking services in the River North, Gold
Coast and Streeterville neighborhoods.
So far, Elana says she loves the challenge of owning and
operating her own business. "My favorite part about my new
business is that I get to be with dogs most of the day. There is
no better stress reliever than spending time with a dog! I also
love that I get to help people learn how to work with their dogs
to create a calm home environment."
When thinking back on her education at Solomon Schechter,
Elana says that the greatest impact of her Schechter education
was that she learned Jewish morals and principles in an
integrated and focused way. Like most Schechter graduates,
Elana says that many of her good friends today are the friends
with whom she attended Schechter.
Elana's older brother, Jordy (SSDS '94) lives in the city with his
wife, Ally, and their 10-month-old daughter, Lexi. Jordy owns
Prime Time Marketing, a marketing and media firm. Click here
to learn more about Prime Time.
Elana's younger brother, Eric (SSDS '01) also lives in the city
with his wife, Meredith. He will graduate from the University of
Illinois in Chicago Medical School in two weeks and will be
doing his residency at Loyola University Hospital.

Shabbat Table Talk
Parashot Behar-Behukotai
May 4, 2013 - 24 Iyar 5773
Prepared by
Rabbi Joseph Prouser
Temple Emanuel of North Jersey
Parashat Behar begins with an
extended discussion of the sabbatical year, the last in an
ongoing seven-year cycle. During the seventh year the land is
given a rest; it is not sown or planted, reaped or pruned. What
grows naturally is permissible for use. After seven such sevenyear cycles, the fiftieth year is observed as a jubilee. In addition
to observing the restrictions associated with the sabbatical year,
the jubilee also is marked by the restoration of property to its
original owners and by the manumission of Hebrew slaves who
have not yet been redeemed from servitude. Sellers and buyers
alike are told to be scrupulously fair in real estate transactions,
accurately adjusting costs and values as they draw closer to the
jubilee.
