reading strategy DEJs (Double-Entry Journals) and take notes.
 Students will then organize information and report on DEJs following the rubric and
requirements listed and explained in the student handout.

HW: This project is for homework if not finished in class.
Day 2
 Student presents information visually on DEJs using P. Board to the teacher. Teacher
uses the speaking rubric on presentation then discusses any gaps in understanding of
how to use the reading strategy.
 Respond in student notebook to the journal prompt on courage from the Weekly Reader
magazine.
 Explain how to use the DEJ strategy with the current text and hand out a rubric.
 Begin reading Call It Courage aloud and completing DEJ in notebook. Teacher keeps
DEJ as well, modeling the process. Both readers stop periodically as they complete notes
in the DEJ, sharing their thoughts and feelings.
 Continue throughout the period.
HW: Student finishes reading completing requirements for the DEJ. Copy vocab words on
flashcards.
Day 3
Review Vocab Words.
Share DEJ and turn in for a grade.
Activate prior knowledge in a discussion about Rosa Parks.
Introduce the nonfiction story It’s My Constitutional Right!
Student reads silently, keeping a DEJ.
Day 4
