Begin The Great Gatsby
Homework should be expected each night: either reading, vocabulary or questions
9/9 – Reviewed Chapter 1 with worksheet (finish second side for extra credit). Read
Chapter 2 – complete worksheet for homework.
9/12 – Covered Ch 1-3 in depth – took notes (heads up on quiz). Unit Project was
explained (due Oct 3 and 7). HW: Read Chapter 4.
9/15 – Final projects assignments were given this week – due Oct 3 and 7. HW: Use
study guide to make sure you understand the major events of the book so far.
9/19 – HW: Finish chapter 6 and read to 131 in Chapter 7. Notes were taken, study guide
questions were discussed. Next Friday will be a work day for Unit Projects.
9/23 – A worksheet over the homework was given and discussed – students must finish
for homework. Mr. Cherry, from student services gave a presentation on looking ahead
to college.
9/24 – Chapter 6 and 7 discussed (climax of the book). Friday we will finish Chapter 7
and students will have a full class period to work on the computers for their Unit Project.
9/26 – Chapter 7 was finished in class. Chapter 8 was assigned for homework and a quiz
will be given on Tuesday. Tuesday will be a work day for final projects with computers.
9/30 – HW was to read chapter 8 – pop quiz today! Listen to Chapter 9 (audio recording)
– work day for projects on the 3rd. Project due date moved to the 14th.
9/3 – Substitute Teacher: work day for projects – due Oct. 14th.
9/7 – Review for final Gatsby test, book is complete. Test to be on the 8th.
10/8 – Gatsby tests were given as a take home test. All short and long answers must be
typed, double spaced and proofread. Unit Projects are due the day they return (on the
14th) and PSAT’s will be taken on the 15th. Reminder: All permission slips for the Salem
Field Trip must be returned with a $40 payment by Oct. 15th.
10/14 – Take home tests and final projects are due! Grade reports were given out to
students who did not pass one or both in. Will collect Gatsby books on Friday. Finish
Gatsby movie.
10/15 – PSAT’s
10/17 – Class had a work day (projects continue to not be turned in). New novels will be
given out next week.
10/21 – Character Sheets were given out and explained. These will serve as an outline
for a Character Analysis Essay due in a week. Rough drafts will be started on Wed.
Field Trip on Thursday!
10/22 – Character Sheets (completed) due! Rough drafts started and are due (typed and
having been edited by someone in the Learning Lab or another teacher) on 10/28.
10/23 – Field Trip
10/24 – Day for working on rough drafts – completed rough drafts with edits due on
Wed, 29th!
10/28 – Rough drafts due, dance presentation in gym.
10/29 – Work day for final drafts with computers – due 10/31! Power point to begin The
Crucible.
10/31 – Packet for The Crucible, books given out. Open note quiz next class!
11/4 – Open note quiz – First Act of The Crucible started
11/5 – Finish Act I and do questions (substitute)
11/7 – Discuss Act I and Act I questions (passed in at the end of class)
11/12 – Begin Act II – assign and explain Act II reader response journals – HW: do one
journal, finish Act II
11/14 – Discuss Act II, collect journal, assign the other 3 journals for homework, watch
Act I and II of movie.
11/18 – Collected homework for Act II. Began Act III. Watched some of the film. HW:
Finish Act III.
11/19 – Reviewed the end of Act III. Began Act IV. Reviewed packet and what work
was expected to have been passed in (Act I questions, Act II reader response journals)
Act III quotations will be taken as a quiz on Friday – study, books will not be allowed!
THANKSGIVING BREAK – Have a good one!
12/2 – Finished the last few minutes of The Crucible film, took notes over: conflict,
historical inaccuracies. Grades close for progress reports Friday! HW: Act IV questions
were assigned for tomorrow; conflict worksheet was assigned for Friday. Final test will
be on the 10th!
12/3 – Homework collected (Act IV questions). Reminder that conflict worksheet is due
Friday. Review for Crucible test (next Wed). Handout of American Poets – small
project due next Friday, students much choose 1 or 2 and “teach” a 10 minute class on
their poet(s).
12/5 – Work day with computers and media resources for mini poet project. Homework
collected (conflict worksheet). Reminder about test on Wed. Tuesday will be a work day
as well for mini poet project. Grades close for Progress Reports!!
12/9 – Work Day for presentations on Friday
12/10 – Crucible Test!
12/12 – Snow Day – presentations will be due Tuesday!
12/16 – Mini poet presentations, pass out Catcher books and packet.
12/17 – Presentations continued, began Chapter 1
12/19 – Presentations continues, finished, discussed and took notes on Chapters 1 and 2.
12/23 – Holiday Party (yes, even high-schoolers get to have fun)
WINTER BREAK – Have a good one!
1/6 – Went over packet, reminders about Reader Response Journals, read Chapter 3 and
4, PowerPoint over methods of characterization. HW: find examples of two methods in
book.
1/7 – Snow Day
1/9 – HW: Read Chapter 5
1/13 – Pop quiz over homework, read Chapters 6 and 7 – reviewed for midterm, collected
characterization HW, notes on forms of comedy. HW: Finish one Reader Response
Journal (RRJ) for Friday.
1/14 – Midterm review, makeup pop quiz assigned – must be turned in on Friday for
credit, reminder: RRJ due on Friday. Expectations for midterm reviewed.

2/6 – Guidance presentation for College and Career project, work on bridges. HW: read

reminder, RRJ, 50’s culture and symbols in the book
2/11 – read from book, hw: read Ch. 21-24
2/13 – computers for RRJ, work on career and college project, finish book over break

2/24 – Finished book. Critical feedback prompt in class, reminders about College and
Career project, review for test this week, reminder about Reader Response Journal
2/25 – Test review - Final test will be Friday! Reminder: progress reports come out
March 6th – all late work must be in by Monday, March 2nd.
2/27 – Final test for Catcher in the Rye. Reminders: crossword puzzle needs to be passed
in – it counts as a participation grade, all late work must be in by Monday.
3/3 – All late work collected, grades closed for progress reports. Work day for College
and Career Project. Checkpoint grade given at end of class.
3/4 – Work day for College and Career Project. All late work must be in today – grades
have closed for progress reports.
3/6 – Work day for College and Career Project. Rough drafts of research papers due
March 16.
3/10 – Began new novel: A Farewell to Arms. Passed out packet, went over
expectations, read and discussed first three chapters. HW: Read Chapters 4 and 5, be
prepared to discuss first three study questions in packet.
3/13 – Discussion, read Chapters 6, 7 and 8. HW: Read Chapters 8 and 9.
