Start of School Year and Welcome
Letter #1—Parents - Back to School Information
Dear Parents,
Another summer vacation is coming to a close, and we hope it has been a
pleasant one for you and your family. We have been very busy at (school) this
summer getting the building cleaned and reorganized for the arrival of your
children on (date). In addition to the building preparation, we have been
preparing some new curriculum materials. We are very enthusiastic about the
program being offered this year and are sure your children will find the program
exciting and challenging. On the first day of school, your child will be given a
handbook of general information that will be of use to you throughout the school
year. If your child is interested in purchasing lunch on the first day of school, the
menu is as follows:
Hot Dog or Pizza Tater Tots, Pear, Pretzel Rod and Milk
Cost - $1.00 or 30 cents for milk if you pack. We are anticipating a wonderful 19 school year.
Sincerely, Principal

Letter #3—Parents - Your Child Starts Kindergarten
Dear Parents:
Your child has reached an important milestone. On (date) he or she will start
kindergarten at the (school name) Elementary School. It is an exciting
experience, and it should be a very enjoyable one. May I offer a few suggestions
to insure your child will have a smooth start:
1. Try to bring your child to the school a day or two before school opens. Explore
the school. As you will see from this visit, we have an exceptionally attractive and
well-equipped facility.
2. In discussing the start of school with your child, be positive. Tell him or her
how much fun school can be. Your child will like kindergarten--especially if you
present it in an enthusiastic way.
3. When your child first gets on the school bus, it can be a rather traumatic time
for both of you. Stay calm and cheerful. Say goodbye with a smile. Remember,
this is an adventure for your child, a fascinating beginning.
We believe that your child's first day of kindergarten will be an enjoyable one. We
intend to do everything in our power to make sure that it is. Our teachers are
looking forward with great enthusiasm to (date). It is a day we are sure you will
look back on with fond memories.
Sincerely, Principal
Letter #4—Colleague - Back to School Information
Dear Colleague:
I hope this letter finds you in good health and enjoying the summer. We've been
very busy at (school) getting the school cleaned and reorganized for your arrival
in a couple of weeks.
There have been several significant developments over the summer that I
thought would be of interest to you. They are:
1. We hired Mrs. (name) as our Computer Room aide.
2. (name) will be leaving us to accept a job at () Corporation. Her last day will be
on (date), but she will attend our beginning of the year party at my house on
(date). We can say our "farewells" at that time.
3. (name) completed a writing project at the (university) and is now classified as
a "Writing Fellow."
4. (name) and (name) attended the PDE Curriculum Conference at (university) in
July.
5. We've repaired one half of our bleachers in the gym.
6. The MIMI lab has a new image.
7. We've had a large number of new student registrants (25+).
8. Mrs.(name) accepted a clerk-typist position at our high school.
Those are some of the happenings over the past several weeks. I'll give you
many more details at our faculty meeting on (date). Don't forget your flex day.
You can put it in any time between now and the 26th of August.
Hope to see you soon.
Sincerely, Principal
Letter #5—Principal's Message - Opening School
Welcome to the 19 - school year at (school). Each school year seems to bring on
a new vitality for young and old alike. This year is no exception. I have been
impressed by the energy and enthusiasm of our students. A positive attitude
toward learning already seems to be in place. That attitude is reflective of the
work and spirit of parents and staff. At the present time it is paying dividends.
We hope you will meet and warmly greet some new members of our staff. Mrs.
(name) will be teaching (grade and subjects); Mrs. (name) will be teaching (grade
and subjects); Mr. (name) will be teaching (grade and subjects). Miss (name) will
be joining us in the near future as a (position). In the interim we are fortunate to
have Mrs.(name) as a part of our staff. We presently have an enrollment of
(number) students. (#) grade students number(?) and in (#) there are (number)
students. Because of the increased number of students enrolling in August,
particularly in (#) grade, we did add a section giving us nine sections in (#) grade
and eight sections in (#) grade. I would like to thank the parents for working with
us through our transportation difficulties. We continue to experience some
problems, but we are confident that those problems will subside soon. The PTA
has helped me through these first few months and has made my beginning
easier.
We are anticipating a very good year at (school). The spirit of cooperation seems
to pervade our atmosphere. We appreciate your support.
Sincerely, Principal
Letter #6—Letter to a New Student in the District
Dear (new student's name):
Welcome to (school). We are looking forward to your arrival on (date). We know
it is difficult for you to leave your friends and acquaintances, but we also know
that you will have the opportunity to meet many new people and make new
friends.
The staff at (school) is available to assist you and your parents as you make
plans for enrolling. We will need your health records and a transcript of your
grades. These records should be sent to us by your present school.
You will find enclosed a copy of our school handbook. It will answer many of the
questions you may have about (school).
Please accept my best wishes for a continued happy and successful school year.
Sincerely, Principal
Letter #7—Letter to a New Parent in the District
Dear (new parent's name),
Your child may have already filled you in on some of the details of life at (school)-whether the other kids are friendly, what the teachers are like here, the quality of
the lunches served, and whether (school) is easier or more difficult than the
school (he/she) last attended. We like to think that after the first ten days all new
students fill like veterans. We are pleased to have you as partners in this
educational year. As the year progresses, and as you become either more
informed or more puzzled, we encourage you to call the school and talk with
those who might be of help. If your question deals with in-class events, please
ask to speak with the teacher. If it deals with the overall program, curriculum, or
activities, please contacts me directly. One of our goals is to see that the
parents and guardians of students--like the students themselves--feel at home at
(school). To accomplish this, Parent Newsletters are mailed to all students'
homes throughout the school year, providing you with information about events
and activities. You will also want to look at 's (student's name) copy of the
(school) Student Handbook. It does a good job of explaining a typical year at our
school. By reading it, you will have a better idea of what to expect.
Sincerely, Principal
Letter #8—Faculty Member - Opening of School
Dear Faculty Member:
My hope is that this letter finds you healthy and relaxed. As always, the summer
is swiftly passing, yet the work here at (school) continues. The maintenance and
custodial crews are busy preparing the building for the arrival of students on
(date). They have been schooling me and trying to keep me in line, even as I
badger them with a multitude of questions. I have seen some staff members who
have been in for curriculum work or classroom preparation. A reminder that
(date) is a work day for all teachers. In addition (date) is also scheduled as a
work day; however, teachers may elect to come in any day during the week of
(month, date) making (date) a "flex day". The (month, date) day will begin with a
meeting at the high school. More information will be coming from the
superintendent's office for that day.
I am looking forward to the year and working with each of you. My goal is to
make a contribution to a school and staff that are already highly regarded. Enjoy
the remaining days of August.
See you soon.
Sincerely, Principal
Letter #9—Faculty Member - Opening of School
Dear Faculty Member,
A new school year presents many new opportunities, new classes, new faces,
sometimes new courses, and often new materials. Newness alone, however,
cannot produce significant change. We must be willing to be caught up in the
rebirth that is possible with each new year. Starting a new year gives us the
opportunity to make new plans, design new strategies, and implement new ideas.
Whether one's responsibility is administrating, teaching, preparing lunches,
transporting students, maintaining a building, or managing an office, there is
always room for improvement and for new ways to do a good job even better.
We can be proud of what we have achieved--but our achievements are not due
to complacency and satisfaction with the status quo. Our program is what it is
because a staff of dedicated, aspiring men and women have a common goal--to
do what is best for students--and are always looking for ways to achieve that
goal. This year, as in the past, we must concentrate on the processes that spur
continuing advancement: evaluating what we have, determining what we can do
to improve, and identifying what we need to make those improvements.
Let us make 19 - l9 our best year ever!
Sincerely, Principal
