We currently offer a three year PhD studentship to work on topics relating to the
development of eHealth technologies including digital and social media innovation,
mHealth platforms and social sensing systems.
The successful candidate will become a member of Professor Ara Darzi’s research
team, will work closely with clinicians, and will carry out research cutting across the
following areas: empowering patients to actively engage in the monitoring of their own
health; remote care delivery; best use of mobile technology in healthcare and social
media for the assessment of healthcare quality. The post is suitable for engineers or
scientists wishing to develop research skills in a multidisciplinary environment.
To apply you will need to have a strong computing, mathematical or engineering
background and experience in one or more of the following areas:
 AI, Machine Learning and Data Mining
 Social Media and Social Network Analysis
 Opinion Mining and Sentiment Analysis
Additionally you should be able to write large software programs, especially in Java and
C/C++, and have a good working knowledge of database languages.
Applicants should usually have a good 1st class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in
a relevant subject and preferably also a good Masters degree. Applicants must be fluent
in spoken and written English.
The PhD programme is open to EU nationals. The funding is for three years and covers
both fees and living expenses. Research progress is assessed each year and continuing
receipt of funds will depend on satisfactory academic progress. The stipend will be
£17,500 pa (tax free).
