Betsinger Road- The City continues its effort to
widen, install concrete curbing and resurface
Betsinger Road. This project, partially funded by
State funds, is one of the largest road projects
undertaken by the City. Much of the preliminary
work has been done by the City’s skilled work force
with assistance from the Vernon Highway
Department and Oneida County Public Works. The
City thanks those agencies for their help and also
the residents along Betsinger Road for their
understanding during construction.
Department of Motor Vehicles and County Clerk at
City Hall, 4th Wednesday of each month, 10am2pm- All are encouraged to use the satellite office
which offers services including car, snowmobile and
boat registrations and renewals, driver’s license
renewals, and license plate services. An Oneida
County Clerk’s office representative is also available
for other services such as passports and Veterans ID
cards. Please note the remaining 2013 satellite
office dates- September 25, October 23, November
27. *No date in December due to Christmas.
STAR- Many have received letters from the State to
renew their respective BASIC STAR exemption.
Anyone in Sherrill that has questions or difficulty
renewing should contact Bob Comis at 363-2440 for
assistance. Seniors that are qualified for Enhanced
STAR do not need to renew at this time.
Historian- Thank you to Craig Crowell who was
appointed City Historian in 2000 and served until
this year. His work to gather and archive items
related to the City of Sherrill has resulted in a rich
collection of information which is stored at City Hall
and will be preserved as a resource for the
community about city history. The City appreciates
his work and wishes him well.
Enhanced STAR- For those individuals that will be
turning 65 in 2014 and do not have Enhanced STAR,
for Enhanced STAR purposes you are considered 65
as of January 1, 2014 regardless of when your actual
birthday is. In order to receive this exemption and
assuming you meet the income limits your
application MUST be processed prior to March 1,
2014. Please contact Bob Comis at 363-2440 with
any questions.
Police Department Reminders- Please note the
following phone numbers- For emergencies call 911,
to file a police report or if you have a police related
question you’d like to speak to an officer about call
363-3200, to leave a message for an officer on an
existing case or to leave information if you are going
on vacation call 363-6221. Please do not call City
Hall about police matters.
Sherrill Commissioner Election- The election for
Sherrill City Commissioner will be held November 5,
6am-9pm in conjunction with the general election
at the Sherrill City Court room. Exercise your right
to vote! Running for the two Commissioner slots
are the incumbents, Jeff Gilbert and William (Bill)
Vineall.
-There are various scams in which callers say they
need your personal or financial information in order
to provide a service. Do not give out information
without knowing who you are talking to.
Contact Information- Please contact City Hall with
your updated contact information such as phone
numbers. This will help the City to be able to get in
touch with you if needed.
-Studded tires are allowed October 15-May 1.
-The “No Parking” on city streets ordinance resumes
November 1 and will be in effect until April 30. This
ordinance applies to all streets between 2-7am.
-School is back in session! Drivers should stop for
all stopped school buses, as well as be aware of
children crossing the roads.

Transfer Station Information
The transfer station will be open Wednesdays 3:305:30pm and Saturdays 8am-1pm until October 31.
After that it will be open only on Saturdays. The
transfer station is for city residents and residents
must purchase coupons, which are available at City
Hall, in order to drop off items at the transfer
station. Please see the fees below and call City Hall,
363-2440 with any questions.
-Brush and Green Waste Pick-Up- Every other
Monday- October 7, October 21. After October 21
all brush must be taken to the City’s transfer station
at no charge. The City will start to pick up leaves
when the weather dictates. Leaves are used for
composting so please do not put branches, sticks, or
twigs in with your leaves. Please rake leaves to the
curb or bag them.

Battery Disposal- Under the "NYS Rechargeable
Battery Law" it is illegal to toss rechargeable
batteries in the trash in NYS. They contain toxic
metals that can be released into the environment.
Rechargeable batteries contained in electronic
products must be removed prior to disposal.
Batteries covered by this law include batteries for
lap tops, cameras, cell phones, and rechargeable
alkaline batteries. Sherrill residents may bring
rechargeable batteries to City Hall for disposal.
Household alkaline batteries should be placed in
your trash for disposal. Previously, alkaline battery
disposal posed environmental threat because of
mercury content. Since mercury has been phased
out of battery production, single-use alkaline
battery disposal has become safer and such items
should be placed with your trash. Please visit

The credit can be used toward open bowling,

-Oneida County Office for the Aging- On the first
Wednesday of every month, August-May, at 11am a

people of any age with disabilities, with many

-CAC Craft and Chat Group- Join this group the first,
third and fifth Wednesday of each month, 11am1pm, to knit, sew, or create any other craft. Buy
lunch at the CAC or bring your own.

Daily Programs
-Walking in the gym- This is a self-monitored
program open to all, weekday mornings 8-9:30am.
-Kids Play Time- Monday-Friday, 9:30am-12pm
Come join this self-monitored program for parents
to bring their children, ages 5 and younger, for
indoor play in the gym. Children must be
supervised by an adult.
-Open Gym- The gym at the CAC can be used for
basketball. Fees are: $3 per person for ½ court use,
one hour maximum or $24 for full court use, 8
people minimum, one hour maximum. Sherrill
residents must sign out basketballs. Children 15
and under must be supervised by a parent or
guardian. Please call for availability.

-Rescue Me K-9 Dog Rescue Dog Socialization
Classes- Come to these free classes for anybody
who wants to bring their dog. Donations are
accepted, 6-7pm, please contact Debbie Martin,

This summer we trekked again to the high peaks in
the Adirondacks. We hiked through Avalanche Pass
and climbed Phelps Mt. for a sunny spectacular
view of mountains. The next day we went caving to
Natural Stone Bridge & Caves near Pottersville, N.Y.
We had fun and adventure crawling through tight
dark caves and then floating down an underground
tunnel.

celebration. Your generosity allowed us to
purchase 127 books for the library! Although the
celebration of our centennial is over, our need for
your support is not. With recent budget cuts from
both Oneida County and the City of Oneida, your
support is more important than ever in ensuring our
ability to continue to serve the community. We are
asking for donations towards the purchase of books
for the library. These $25 donations will be
recognized by a bookplate identifying the book as
one “Donated by the Patrons of the SherrillKenwood Free Library”. We recently replaced the
carpeting in the upstairs of the library for the safety
of our patrons. We are asking you to help us offset
the cost of this improvement to your library. You
can do so by “purchasing” a square yard of
