“Throughout my university study, CityU BBA program had offered me with ample
opportunities to learn new things. Through various project works, study tours,
competitions and student activities organized by the program, I got to work and blend
with the local students. Not only did I learn from them about Hong Kong’s culture but

also the spoken dialect, Cantonese. These, in addition to solid business knowledge
and professional trainings provided by the BBA program, have greatly helped me in
paving my career path.”

“In 2009, I completed my university study in Business Economics in City University of
Hong Kong and started working at the Swiss private bank, Julius. Through all these
years of learning various subjects, I find the world of finance to be the most exciting.
I believe analytical skills, with good knowledge of statistics and mathematics, are
important to my career. From private banking to consulting and finally to quant
modelling, I never stop learning new things. I believe it is the only way to find out what

“Being able to stand out from 3000 job applicants of a MNC is not easy. Courses
offered by IS Department helped me in building a solid foundation in areas like SEM,
SEO, keyword search, CPC, CPM, etc. The courses are very up-to-date with business
trends (e.g. IS4246 Digital Marketing and CRM, GE1206 Accelerating Professional

graduate job in Client Solutions Analyst.
To join MNC, global vision is essential, IS Department and CB supports students to
explore globally by providing unique internship chances and scholarships, e.g. I have
been to USA and South Africa to do cultural exchange, which built up my global soft
skills and made me more independent.”

“Business knowledge is undoubtedly crucial for a job in the business sector. I would
say social and communication skills are equally important for a successful career,
especially when we have to work as a team. CB provided me not only professional
knowledge and a broad business sense, but also the chance to develop my
interpersonal skills through a series of activities. I found that what I gained from CB is
practical and relevant to my workplace.”

“Study hard, play hard” is normally the perception of students. More importantly, in
CityU, people there care much about students’ personal growth. Other than acquiring
an analytical mind and on-the-job skills, we have also gained lots of support and
encouragement from the teachers. CityU has worked hard to nurture year by year groups
of young talents who are strong in their minds and ready to join in the workforce.

First Year Teaching and Learning
The first year at university is an important transition for students as they adapt to
new ways of learning in a new academic environment. To help students cope with
the challenges they face, we have strategically redesigned our curricular and cocurricular initiatives which comprise the following PRIDE themes:
•
Personalized instruction where each individual matters
•
Rich learning experiences
• Integrative learning
•
Dedicated instructors
•
Ethics oriented learning
A Team Effort
A culture of collaboration among teachers is crucial to creating an integrated firstyear learning experience. We seek to achieve this through:
• teaching and learning forums involving all first-year instructors and tutors
organized at the beginning of each semester
• regular lunch gatherings for first-year instructors to share experience and
good practices
Embedded Ethics Education
Our approach to ethics education:
• Adopted five core values, i.e. integrity, responsibility, fairness, respect, and
compassion
• Ethical issues and core values are embedded into first year courses
• Workshops and forums for instructors are held at the beginning of each
semester
• Set up an “Ethics Homepage” on the First Year Teaching and Learning Web site
which functions as a repository for resources related to ethics education
Student Advising Scheme
The Student Advising Scheme is designed to assist first-year BBA students in
addressing their concerns or queries by means of academic advising, mentoring
support, resources provision, and other recommendations. The mission of SAS
is to prepare students for lifelong learning by empowering them to develop
and implement sound educational strategies that promote their academic,
professional and personal development. It is hoped that students will develop
themselves to be self-directed learners and decision makers through this shared
advisory process between advisors and advisees.
10
First Year Teaching and Learning
Personalized Instruction via iLearn
All first-year students can get access to the iLearn platform via notebook PCs or
mobile devices. This initiative significantly boosts faculty-student interaction in
large classes by:
• enabling instructors to ask questions in different formats and view students’
immediate feedback at individual and group levels
• motivating students to answer or raise questions anonymously or with
identities revealed
“The use of notebook PCs has brought on revolutionary changes in the classroom,”
said Dr Andrew Chan, Director of First Year Teaching and Learning. “Instead of
dead silence, we now get a large number of enthusiastic responses from students
to our questions. How to handle numerous students’ responses within the time
available poses a NEW challenge to instructors teaching large classes.”
Peer Assisted Learning Scheme (PALSI)
With senior students serving as PALSI leaders to review course material with
junior counterparts, the scheme helps students to:
• become more participatory and proactive
• develop effective study skills
“Both PALSI leaders and students welcome PALSI because it is disciplined,
interactive, proactive and effective”, said Dr. Margaret Poon, Associate
Professor in the Department of Accountancy. “It is encouraging to see
students become life-long learners through this learning initiative offered by
the College of Business.”
Language Clinic
The Language Clinic is a joint effort by students and staff to promote quality
English writing and foster a culture of literacy.
From the language clinic, students are able to:
• get editing and proofreading help on assignments, papers and reports;
• get individual counseling on their difficulties with English writing;
• devise a personalized plan to improve English grammar and writing.

acquire hands-on experiences in the business world before graduation. Students can apply
for either part-time or full-time job placements in local, mainland and overseas companies.
