Journey of Manga
Henry Sotherans is very pleased to present an
exhibition of Japanese prints which follows the
development of Manga from its early routes in the 19th
Century up to the more recent Anime storyboards
produced for Studio Ghibli.
In our previous Japanese catalogue produced last year,
titled: 20th C. Japanese prints we offered a small selection
of Manga. It was due to the popularity of these that lead
us to bring you this wonderful collection of Manga
prints selected to show the development from a focus
on Warrior Samurai to modern day Dragon Ball.
The catalogue opens with a rare pentaptych by
TOYOKUNI III (1786-1864), showing a reconciliation
between two respected warlords that took place on 15th
May 1558 (item 1).
Highlights from the collection include the woodblock
prints by UTAGAWA, Yoshitora (Fl.ca.1836-1882) (items
21–22), who was born in Edo (Modern day Tokyo) and
became a pupil of UTAGAWA, Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) (items
25–27), also featured in the exhibition. Both artists
developed a reputation for excelling in their depictions
of Warriors.
2
There is also a good selection of modern Anime prints
from the series of The Brave Police J-Decker by YATATE,
Hajime (items 69–74) as well as the legendary Dragon
Ball series by TORIYAMA, Akira (items 99–102).
The catalogue concludes with a small selection of
original Anime prints for Studio Ghibli, as published in
Japan, 1988 by MIYAZAKI, Hayao (items 103–130) as well
as five stunning posters (items 131–135), including two
for “My Neighbour Totoro.”
We hope you enjoy this latest offering from Japan. The
private view will be held in the evening of Thursday 1st
October in the Print Department. Please see back of
catalogue for RSVP details. The exhibition will be on
display for 3 weeks from Friday 2nd October – Friday
23rd October 2015.
Please Note: All prints have been mounted using
conservation quality board. The sizes given are image
sizes.
Journey of Manga
1. TOYOKUNI III ( 1786-1864). Takeda Shingen and Uesugi
Kenshin at the Battle of Kawanakajima. Original framed
woodblock prints pentaptych, as published in 1884. 590 x
1510 mm.
£2,340
The two warlords Uesugi Kenshin (1530-1578) and Takeda
Shingen (1521-1573) are legendary figures in Japanese
history. Famed for their military prowess and intense
rivalry, their conflict culminated in the Battles of
Kawanakajima, series of five battles from 1553-1564 that
were among the most brutal and tactically inventive of the
Sengoku (Warring States) period in Japan.
Takeda Shingen, seen riding a white horse on the left bank
of the river, had conquered Shinano province in 1552,
driving out the resident daimyo Ogasawara Nagatoki. His
territory seized by the Takeda forces, Nagatoki allied with
the Uesugi clan in an effort to reclaim it. The personalities
of the two rivals are clearly contrasted; Uesugi Kenshin
sits calm and motionless on the right, staring intensely
across the river at his rival Takeda Shingen, whose
dramatic, dynamic pose on horseback conveys a far more
energetic and aggressive temperament.
This scene shows a reconciliation of both sides that took
place on 15th May 1558. The fast-flowing Chikuma River
that divides the two clans, who adopt defensive positions
in a display of mutual distrust, conveys the tense, fragile
and ultimately transient nature of this truce.
Kawanakajima, meaning “Island in the middle of the
river”, is the meeting point of the Sai and Chikuma Rivers.
It is located in Shinano, or modern day Nagano prefecture,
and provides the setting for this print. The temple on the
far right of the print is Zenko-ji, a Buddhist Temple that
served an extremely important role as a base for the
Uesugi troops during many of these battles.
Toyokun III (1786-1864), also know as Utagawa Kunisada,
was a gifted draftsman, and a pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni
I. Following his rise to the head of the Utagawa studio
follwing the death of Toyokuni I in 1825, the designs of
Utagawa Toyokuni III are famed for their high level of
technical skill. This ambitious composition, combining
both breadth of vision with a high level of detail, also
demonstrates the artist’s mastery of Western “Vanishing
Point” perspective, which had been only recently perfected
by Japanese print makers.
