Summer “Reading” AP Human Geography 2015
 Please Note that I have changed the reading assignment from last year! Fast
food Nation will now be an extra credit opportunity for the 3rd grading
quarter. I have made this change in part based on student input.
If you have an Instagram account, I would like you to start following. If you do
not have an Instagram account, please do not set one up on account of my
class! Throughout the school year, my students have actually brought the
following pages to my attention and said that following them have helped
them in class!
1. natgeo This is the official Instagram account of National Geographic.
Many students throughout the school year have enjoyed seeing images from
around the world, especially as it pertains to AP Human Geography
2. theglobewanderer Another wonderful Instagram that students have enjoyed
following. Pictures and culturally relevant events are updated daily
3. earthpix Incredible images of our planet Earth
4. NPR The official Instagram of National Public Radio. This site contains
images and links to stories/current events.
Here is your Assignment…I would like you to complete 1
current event from the following weeks beginning with the week
of

July 20th
July 27th
August 3rd
August 10th
August 17th
The current event can come from a variety of sources including yahoo.com,
cnn.com, npr.com etc…please stay away from politically slanted websites. (we
will talk about this in class if you are confused) The current event can also come
from something you see on television. My students have come to refer to this as
“intelligent television” as opposed to “mindless television.
To do this, here is what you need to do
1. List the title of the current event. If the current event comes from
something you see on television, create a working title.
2. Date of the current event…not the date that you have completed the event,
rather when was the article published or on television
3. Where is the event taking place? Be as specific as possible.
4. Which one of the following AP Human Geography Themes would you
classify the event under…
a. Physical Geography
b. Population or Migration
c. Cultural Patterns (such as, but not limited too. Language, Religion,
Popular culture, Identity)
d. Warfare/global conflict
e. Cities and Urban Land Use
f. Agriculture or anything pertaining to Food
g. Industrial or Economic Development.
5. Then simply write a paragraph summary of what you have read. A
paragraph for this assignment will consist of 7-10 sentences.
When you finish the assignment you should have a total of Seven current events. If
