SCHOOL PROFILE
2014-2015
School Overview
North Broward Preparatory School (NBPS) is an independent,
coed, non-sectarian, Pre-Kindergarten through 12th Grade,
college preparatory, day and boarding institution. The NBPS
community is remarkably diverse with students from various
countries, cultures, and religions. Our residence halls host 262
residential students from 38 countries. We admit students on
academic and personal merit, without regard to race, religion,
ethnicity, or disability.
Founded in 1957, Lighthouse Point Academy (LPA) offers
elementary (Grades 3-5), middle school (Grades 6-8) and high
school (Grades 9-12) programs on our Coconut Creek Campus.
The LPA program has been designed to present the NBPS
curriculum to students of average to gifted intelligence who have
been diagnosed with mild specific learning disabilities and who
require specialized program accommodations. The students
work in small groups with accommodations of curriculum
and teaching that more effectively help students with varied
learning styles. LPA emphasizes the process involved in learning,
as well as the content of the curriculum.
The LPA program fully supports the NBPS Mission Statement by
striving to provide an atmosphere that fosters the development
of interest as well as the growth of students’ self-esteem and
confidence. This environment is strengthened by close contact
with a caring and dedicated faculty, staff, and administration.
LPA actively encourages students to develop their own sense
of self-awareness, learning strategies, and appropriate social
and community responsibilities. The goal of LPA is to encourage
students to identify and focus on their strengths and to be
caring, responsible, and contributing members of society.
LPA’s strong, traditional college preparatory academic programs
are complemented by enrichment offerings in theater arts, music,
visual and graphic arts, computer science, and other subjects. LPA
provides students with a global perspective as a function of its
membership in the Meritas Family of Schools.
The campus at Coconut Creek is fully networked and features a
Learning Commons, media center, lecture hall, and music and art
studios. Additionally, the campus features a closed-circuit TV/video
production studio, student center, computer labs, technology
center, and science facilities.
Student and faculty laptop computers draw on school servers via
wireless technology. All middle and high school students use
laptop computers for class work.
Other facilities include an athletic center, football stadium, soccer
field, track, baseball/softball fields, swimming pools, tennis courts,
and fitness center.
Meritas
Meritas is a global family of distinctive college preparatory
schools that emphasize a whole child approach. Meritas students
and teachers are connected across the world. Among the many
opportunities Meritas brings are video conferencing, exchange
programs, international academic and sports tournaments,
experiential learning opportunities and joint community service
projects. Through association with other students in Meritas
schools, worldwide, our students have a deeper understanding
of other cultures, languages, and traditions, and are prepared for
success in an increasingly global economy. Similarly, Meritas faculty
and administrators collaborate to offer a world-class education.

Curriculum
The LPA Upper School curriculum has been designed to offer college preparatory work to students with mild learning disabilities.
To achieve this goal, learning strategies and study skills are taught throughout all grades and in all content areas. Students are
taught to understand their own learning styles and to master strategies to compensate for their disabilities.
All course numbers ending in “5” are LPA courses.
Student enrollment - Grades 3 through 12 is 142.
Students who are mainstreamed in academic courses have an NBPS profile submitted in addition to the LPA transcript
and profile.
The LPA curriculum is aligned with the North Broward College Preparatory curriculum. While instruction and assessment are
differentiated, students use grade appropriate textbooks and materials to demonstrate mastery in all subject areas (*Spanish - see
below).
English:
The LPA English curriculum focuses on writing skills and understanding a variety of literary genres, including plays, short
stories, novels, and poetry. The foundations of writing are reviewed, reinforced, and strengthened through continued practice in the
classroom. Research, writing, study skills, organizational skills, and word processing skills are emphasized throughout the curriculum.
Math:
Students are required to take Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and College Algebra.
Instruction includes full-class, small group, and individual work. Students must demonstrate mastery of the subjects through
formative and summative assessments in order to receive course credit.
Science:
Students are required to complete four years of Science. Courses include Biology, Environmental Science, Physics, and Chemistry.
Social Science:
In LPA, high school Social Science course instruction is presented in a group format using multiple instructional modalities. The
process of learning and the development of study skills are emphasized throughout the curriculum. Students take Human Geography
in the 9th grade, World History in the 10th grade, 20th Century History I in the 11th grade, and 20th Century History II in the
12th grade.
Spanish:
Because of language-based disabilities, most LPA students are required to take only two years of a foreign language.
Students take two complete years of Spanish in four years as Spanish 1A and 1B and Spanish 2A and 2B.

Faculty & Administration
The LPA faculty has been chosen for dual expertise in content area and special education techniques. The LPA faculty (Grades 3 -12)
currently consists of 17 full-time teachers and a full-time learning specialist. Ongoing in-service workshops add to faculty knowledge
of learning disabilities, instructional strategies and methods, and classroom management techniques.
Honor Code
Respect for self and community is embodied in an Honor Code designed by our students who pledge: 1) respect for academic
honesty 2) respect for others; 3) respect for property; and 4) respect for myself.
Reporting Policy
By school policy, students and college advisors respond to questions on applications and Secondary School Reports about applicant
honor, discipline, and legal status. Students bear primary responsibility for notifying colleges of reportable offenses occurring after
applications are filed. Inquires about honor, discipline, or legal circumstances should be directed initially to the student.
Athletics
Varsity teams compete in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball,
swimming, tennis, track and volleyball.
Fusion Students
LPA students who are able to excel in specific subjects and who have the ability to thrive in less-accommodated larger classroom
situations may qualify to take classes in NBPS.
Accommodations/Modifications
All LPA classes offer the following accommodations to all students in courses ending in “5”:
• Reduced class size (maximum 12)
• Multi-modality, multi-sensory instruction in all classes
• Learning strategies taught in all classes
• Organizational skills taught in all classes
• Mnemonic devices taught in all classes
• Strategies and study skills, where appropriate, are consistent throughout the content area.
• Self-advocacy skills
• Assignments and textbook reading broken into shorter segments
• Structured review for exams
• Extended time for tests and exams
• Varied methods of assessment
Although LPA does not offer individualized programs, it offers appropriate individual accommodations where needed.
