IN-COUNTRY INDONESIAN COURSES
The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific offers both intensive in-country Indonesian Language and internship
study options in Salatiga, central Java, Indonesia. Theses courses are open to undergraduate and postgraduate
students from The Australian National University (ANU) and other Australian universities, international
scholars, high school students, professionals from the private and non-government sector, government
employees and anyone else with an interest in language and culture of Indonesia.
In-country Indonesian Courses
The Indonesian In-country Courses at ANU are held at Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga and locally known
as Program Intensif Bahasa dan Budaya Indonesia (PIBBI_ or Intensive Courses in Indonesian Language and Culture.
Established in 1973 this Centre is probably the oldest institution for training Australians on a regular basis. Over 3,500
foreigners have graduated from the Centre. In 2005, ANU and Satya Wacana University signed a Memorandum of
Understanding and since then, PIBBI has been approved as an ANU internal Indonesian course. ANU students, therefore,
may do the Indonesian either in the regular semester on-campus or in-country courses.
PIBBI provides students with the opportunity to learn and use Indonesian both in the classroom and in daily real-life
communication with native speakers. Through the course student will be expected to:
•
•
•
•
improve fluency in communicative skills
deepen knowledge of the language within its authentic and changing context
present insights into some aspects of Indonesian culture through guided study
first-hand and intensive contacts with Indonesian society.
The course activities include: language tutorials, short Indonesian cultural presentations, a field assignment, and an
excursion. The instruction is intensive: four hours a day, five days a week. In the afternoon students are free or take
one of the non-language classes such as Indonesian martial arts (pencak silat), cooking, Javanese musical ensemble
gamelan, dance, etc. The size of the class is small, between five to twelve depending on enrolment and level, but usually
never more than 12.
Graduate Studies Select
The Graduate Studies Select (GSS) program is a new initiative at ANU. It welcomes new and diverse groups of people
to take our newly expanded postgraduate in-country study options: business community, government offices, NGOs,
professionals, students from other universities, international students. People with a Bachelor Degree or equivalent
are eligible for the program. There are also pathways for people with a Diploma or Advanced Diploma combined with
relevant work experience. The GSS program is 12 years duration and students can progressively add courses leading to
one of the graduate awards at ANU.
Work Experience: Practical Assignment Courses
This course helps participants to develop the necessary skills to meet the challenges of working with Indonesian
professionals anywhere, or with international bodies operating in Indonesia. It will extend the pragmatic language
skills, deepen understanding of the unwritten conventions and social norms, and professional environments and give
practical experience of working in a real-life situation. This should lay the foundations for a life-long constructive
engagement with colleagues in Indonesia.
ANU COLLEGE OF ASIA & THE PACIFIC
Salatiga
The small university town of Salatiga is an ideal place for an in-country program. Thanks to town’s size, character and history,
participants usually get more personal care and attention from well-educated locals and for less cost than those studying in the
larger cities. Located 500m above the sea, Salatiga offers a much friendlier climate than the hot and humid climate of most places
in the country. One does not usually need AC, cutting the cost of living and accommodation, enhancing a healthier lifestyle. With
a fairly high percentage of Christian population, and a long history of accommodating westerners, Salatiga is significantly less
confronting to westerners than other settings of similar in-country language programs. Salatiga is away from the usual places
of risks of bomb attacks (Bali and Jakarta). Located in the centre of Central Java, Salatiga offers afforadable and 24/7 access of
public transport to nearby cities of Semarang (north), Solo (east), or Yogyakarta (south), where our students spend their weekend
to enjoy the classical court civilisation or the hustle and bustle of the big cities, shopping malls and entertainments.
