Fri., Oct. 17 40th
Anniversary Celebration
Mark your calendars for Berkeley City College’s 40th Anniversary Celebration set for 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.,
Fri., Oct. 17 at Berkeley City College. The event, which launches the college’s 40th anniversary year, will
include music, tours, art exhibits, speakers, film, food, and much more. All of our college community is
invited to participate and integrate their 2014-15 events with BCC’s 40th anniversary. A 40th anniversary
logo, along with flyer templates, was sent via BCC-FAS e- mail to our college community.
ASL Program co-hosts national
Asian Deaf Association conference
Berkeley City College’s American Sign Language Program and the San Francisco-based Bay Area Asian
Deaf Association (BAADA) will cosponsor the 7th annual National Asian Deaf Congress (NADC) conference, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Fri.-Sat., Aug. 22-23, 2014 at BCC The goal of conference is to increase awareness
of Deaf Asian culture, to develop leadership skills and provide members with local, national and international networking opportunities.
The event will provide a variety of opportunities for Berkeley City College ASL students to
enhance and practice their knowledge and skills, and meet Deaf people from all over the United States. It
also will raise the level of recognition of Berkeley City College’s ASL program while allowing the college
to develop national connections to Deaf community members and hearing people who work with the Deaf
community.
Juana Alicia Araiza’s Mural Design
and Creation class create stunning
new work in BCC’s atrium
“From the Ground Up/Desde las raices,” a stunning new work by Berkeley City College’s Mural Design
and Creation class, lead by art instructors Juana Alicia Araiza and Tirso Gonzalez, debuts this fall in the
ground floor atrium as a part of BCC’s year-long 40th anniversary celebration. Beginning in fall 2013,
student artists developed, then implemented, this tribute to the history and legacy of BCC and to the
community that helped to inspire and build the college. The mural serves as an affirmation of BCC’s
continuing commitment to:

A mural dedication ceremony will take place on Fri., Oct. 17 as part of the college’s 40th Anniversary

College welcomes new faculty
to fall 2014 semester
Berkeley City College welcomes new faculty and staff this fall: Ari Krupnick (Philosophy), Alejandro Wolbert Perez (Ethnic Studies) and Carlos Romero (Counseling). New part-time faculty
members include: Ken Buchanan (French), Rafael Clemente (Psychology) and Carolyn Martin (Art).
New classified staff are: Willard Cheng, biology lab technician; Catalina Herrera, special projects
staff assistant; and Alejandra (Ali) Tomas, curriculum and student learning outcomes/assessment
specialist.
Dean Brenda Johnson
named to ACE board of directors
Brenda Johnson, Dean of Student Support Services at Berkeley City College, was appointed to the
Board of Directors of the American Counsel of Education (ACE) Women’s Network of Northern
California. The ACE network identifies, encourages, supports, mentors, promotes, and provides
access to women to help them advance into executive positions and college presidencies. Congratulations, Dean Johnson!
BCC Classified Senate
announces 2014-15 officers
Berkeley City College’s Classified Senate has elected officers for 2014-15. They are Roberto Gonzalez,
president; Catherine Nichols, vice president; and Jasmine Martinez, secretary. Congratulations to all.
College introduces new
Communication Studies AA-T
A Communication Studies Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer (AA-T) was added in late spring
to the college’s AA-T and AS-T degree options, bringing the total to 12. Other AA-T degrees
offered by BCC are in Art History, Elementary Teacher Education, English, History, Philosophy,
Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Studio Arts. AS-T degrees are in Business Administration and Mathematics. Students who complete an Associate Degree for Transfer with a 2.0
GPA are guaranteed admission into their majors at a California State University. An AA-T or AS-T
degree also can add extra points to a UC Berkeley application.

BCC bioscience students
complete CIRM stem cell
research internships
Ten BCC bioscience students finished year-long paid stem cell research internships this summer.
Their research projects were funded by the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM).
They presented posters of their scientific research at CIRM’s Bridges Scientific Meeting in San
Francisco in July. The interns conducted research in laboratories at the University of California
San Francisco, UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles BioMed and Children’s Hospital Oakland Research
Instituted (CHORI).

exhibits locally, nationally
Works by Erica Gagnon, president of Berkeley City College’s Digital Artists Collective (DAC),
were featured in local, statewide and national exhibits this year. They included Viridian Artists’
25th International Juried Exhibition and at the New York Center for Photography Arts; at L.A.’s
Pico House Gallery; at San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art; and at Berkeley’s Expressions
Gallery. Several also were included in the Berkeley Civic Center’s permanent collection.
