FOUNDATION PROGRAMME LECTURERS
Wong Yao Hing
Wong Yao Hing is the
Director of the Engineering
Foundation Year at University
of Southampton Malaysia
Campus. He holds degrees
in Philosophy and Applied
Linguistics from University of
Maryland (USA) and University of
New South Wales (Australia). Yao Hing has taught
and held leadership positions in various educational
institutions and foreign branch campuses in Australia and
Malaysia. He has also spoken at international conferences
on the topic of critical thinking. At University of
Southampton Malaysia Campus, he teaches Academic and
Personal Development, Communicating in English, English
for Engineers and Scientists and and Routes to Success.
During his free time, Yao Hing loves watching movies and
food hunting. He also loves reading and travelling, and
likes listening to classical music.
Grace Chai
Grace Chai holds a first class
honours degree in BEng
Electronics Engineering
majoring in Optical
Engineering from Multimedia
University. She has four years
of working experience in
the industry practising as an
engineer and a project manager. In 2013, she decided
to further her studies and did her PhD in Physics at
University Teknologi Malaysia. She is an experimental
optoelectronics material physicist and has active research
collaborations with theoretical and experimental
physicists in the UK, the USA, Singapore, and Europe.
Grace joined University of Southampton Malaysia
Campus as a lecturer in 2015 and will be teaching on the
Engineering Foundation Year programme.
Ong Ming Tze
Ong Ming Tze will be
teaching mathematics
and programming in the
Engineering Foundation Year
programme at USMC. Having
great interest in mathematics
combined with high
performance computing,
he obtained his B.Sc. in Computational Science from the
National University of Singapore and a M.Sc. in Numerical
Analysis from the University of Manchester where he
had great fun working with Parallel Computers. He has
previously been a lecturer in mathematics and computing
at other institutions for a number of years and views
seriously the preparation of students for successful
completion of their undergraduate studies and beyond.

Learning at University of Southampton takes place through lectures, small
group tutorials, laboratory sessions, workshops, one-on-one personal
tutorials and self-directed study. Our team of dedicated instructors (some
of whose profiles you will find in this flyer) will work closely with students,
providing them with personalized academic guidance and pastoral care to
ensure students gain the most out of their educational experience here at
Southampton. The Foundation Year, in particular, focuses on developing
students’ academic literary, analytical and critical thinking disposition,
confidence, communication skills, team work, resourcefulness and learner
autonomy—in other words, to lay a solid foundation for future success in the
academic, career and personal aspects of their lives.
