Annual Report
Highlights of 2011
Darren Clark
CONSERVE
HFF promoted open space protection and mobilized support for sustainable land use
planning during the creation of the newly adopted Fremont County Development Code.
HFF improved access at the Grandview boatslide through a cooperative effort with
the U.S. Forest Service. HFF also worked with Fremont-Madison Irrigation District to
maintain angler access at the headgate of Independent Canal.
Buffalo River fish ladder
HFF and partners secured the highest winter flow releases in over a decade from
Island Park Dam through the drought management planning process. More water
during winter means more rainbow trout in the Henry’s Fork.
PROTECT
HFF is protecting the watershed through participation in an ongoing critical study of
the Henry’s Fork water supply. This study is evaluating several water management
alternatives, including new storage dams.
HFF staff
HFF advocated for downstream fish habitat during the Ashton Dam reconstruction,
scheduled for completion in 2012.
Chester Dam fish ladder
HFF worked with local fishing guides to
create an annual youth fishing event
called River Buddies to introduce youth to
fly fishing and the Henry’s Fork watershed.
“Our HFF internship is one of
the most transformative summer
experiences our students have.”
HFF continues to grow its internship
opportunities, familiarizing students and
schools with watershed research, while
providing HFF with valuable field workers.
Professor Tim McCoy, Colgate University
speaking of the HFF’s Admiral James
Greene Scholarship opportunity.
Darren Clark
HFF announced a formal commitment to youth education made possible by a gift from
the Melvoin Family Conservation Education Fund. Education for local youth will help
ensure the Henry’s Fork continues to have a voice in the future.

RESTORE
HFF—along with Trout Unlimited, and
the Greater Yellowstone Coalition—restored fish passage above Chester Dam with the
completion of the Chester fish ladder.
HFF completed field work to provide necessary information for the final phase of
negotiations with irrigation interests in the Henry’s Lake Outlet Project. The Outlet
project will improve downstream habitat by reducing erosion and sedimentation.
River Buddies 2011
HFF continued research at small spring creeks from Last Chance through Harriman
State Park in order to design future restoration work that will provide more winter
habitat for juvenile trout.
HFF staff
HFF’s monitoring at the Buffalo River fish ladder shows 100,593 fish, including
11,256 rainbow trout younger than one year old have moved upstream through
the Buffalo River fish ladder since 2006. Most rainbow trout moved upstream from
September to December, and likely would not have survived their first winter without
the fish ladder and habitat upstream in the Buffalo River.
