The food chain to food web game
This game is an interactive game for children to understand how a food chain to food webs
works.
What you need:
String
Assorted food chain to food webs picture cards
How to play:
1. Give each of the students a picture card and a piece of string (cut the string at a
length that they are free to move about).
2. Allow the children a few minutes to read the back of the picture cards so they know
what each picture description is, as some will have a clue in them to help the
children link each picture to each other to make a food chain and food webs.
3. Get the children to make a food chain first by starting with the sun, and then link all
of the other children and pictures together (see the map for guidance’s), then make
the food web. See the map to see how each picture links together.
Remember: the arrows in the chain and webs means “eaten by”.

Here is your first link, a food chain.
Food chain
Here is how you can connect from a food chain to a food web and it is very basic for young
children.
Food web 1
Below are other food webs that can show students how other species can link into a web,
and make it complicated if you wish too:
 Invertebrates – prey on other invertebrates to survive.
 Birds – prey on invertebrates to survive.
 Mammals - like the rat, prey on both plants and invertebrates to survive.

Flash cards
The flash cards guess game is like a memory game, on the front of the cards there are only a
part of an invertebrate with “what am I” and its status, such as “endemic.”
On the back of the cards there is a full picture of the invertebrates and a few facts about
them.
How to play:
1. Hold up a selected card with the front of it facing the students and get them to guess
what invertebrate it might be.
2. Tell the students what the selected invertebrate is after three guesses and read out
the facts about it.
Although this might look like just a guessing game, it can be used throughout the curriculum
and with any age group to understand invertebrate biodiversity, endemic, native and
invasive non-native species.
