AUG.
Remember the first
Burger Fest? Admission buttons were only
a dollar and about
20,000 people packed
the Outagamie County
Fairgrounds to feast on
the world-record 5,520
pound hamburger. To
rehearse for the feat, a
50 pound “mini-burger”
was fried up a couple
months earlier. It was
a success, so what’s
another few thousand
pounds of ground beef?
There were plans to
paint the city’s south
water tower to resemble
a giant burger, but the
cost of the project was
out of reach. Instead,
the tower was wrapped
with a yellow banner
proclaiming Seymour as
the Home of the Hamburger.
Green Bay Dressed
Beef has played a major role in the festival
every year, and along
with Bank One, supplied a semi-truck full of
balloons which were released two weeks before
Burger Fest. Some of the
balloons contained prize
coupons, including one
for a $500 savings bond
from Valley Bank.
The annual See-More
People Run changed its
name to the Bun Run
and kicked off the event.
With more than 200
units, the World’s Largest Hamburger Parade
was a sight to behold.
The Hamburger Olympics featured a grill
throw, bun toss, builda-burger
relay
and
ketchup slide.
People
Magazine,
network news crews
and newspapers from
around the country captured the unveiling of
the world’s largest burger.

Drum and bugle corps
competition was added
in 1990. It was also the
year that “Hamburger
Patty” and “Bunard”
were united in a marriage.
One idea that didn’t
work out was the “Mile
O Burgers.” It was
hoped that people would
line Main Street and eat
their burgers in a wave,
but it just didn’t work
out that way.
AUG. 3, 1991
The burger was back,
this time with cheese.
A one-ton cheeseburger
was cooked up. A fork lift
hoisted a 325 pound roll
of American cheese over
the burger but problems arose when the
pipe holding the cheese
began to bend. A crane
was brought in to hold
the pipe in place. Soft
ground caused the lift
truck to sink and planks
had to be used to keep it
from getting stuck.

CBS Morning News
was on hand Friday
morning to note the
opening of the Hamburger Hall of Fame.
Jeffrey
Tenneson,
author of Hamburger
Heaven, displayed his
huge collection of hamburger memorabilia at
the Hall’s opening.
A hamburger mural
on the south wall of the
Hall of Fame building
on Main Street was unveiled. Painted by Mike
Linsmeyer with help
from Chance Harrison
and David Petri, the mural depicts Hamburger
Charlie,
Hamburger
Patty and Bunard, their
twins, Tennyson’s book
and Seymour’s water
tower.
A one-ton burger was
grilled and served.
Seymour’s Jason Rottier set a new ketchup
slide record at 162 feet 3
inches.

What do you do if your
name is Hamburger?
Why you become the
honorary parade marshals for the World’s
Largest Hamburger Pa-
rade. That’s just what
the Wayne and Amanda
Hamburger family of El
Dorado, Ill. did for Burger Fest.
A special ceremony
was held Friday for the
Hamburger Hall of Fame
to induct its first member - Hamburger Charlie
Nagreen. His daughter,
Violet Bauerke, accepted
the honor.
Also on Friday, the Vlasik Stork and architect
Bob Martens unveiled a
model of a three-story,
hamburger-shaped hall
of fame that Home of the
Hamburger planned to
build one day.
AUG 4-5, 1995
The theme was All
American Burgers and
the chefs cooked up
several different types
of burgers, including
sloppy joes. Instead of
a 2,000 pound burger,
a 1,000 pounder was
made and consumed as
fast as volunteers could
cut, wrap and serve it.
The
U.S.
Olympic
Committee objected to
the use of the Olympic
name, so the winning
entry in a Times-Press
contest renamed the
event the Hamburger
Meet.
The Bun Run drew
499 runners for its largest turnout to date.
AUG. 3, 1996
The theme was “Burgers out of this World.”
An attempt was made to
form the world’s longest
line dance, but it wasn’t
quite long enough.
A 1,000 pound patty
was fried and served.
AUG. 2, 1997
The frying of a giant 24
foot-24 foot hamburger
highlighted “Happy Days
Again at Burger Fest” as
Seymour returned to the
car hop era of the 1950s
and 60s.
The day started with
the
annual
Burger
Breakfast at Hotel Seymour, followed by the
Bun Run, parade and
games.
AUG. 1, 1998
Depot Street became
home to the annual salute to Burgerdom and
let visitors get a good
taste of what life in Seymour is like.
A new addition was a
classic car show. Dozens
of shiny, mint condition
cars were on display.
Jason Rottier broke
his old Ketchup Slide
record after he slid the
entire length of the 200foot slide and crashed
into the hay bales at the
end of the slide.
A 10th anniversary
was something to celebrate!
The day began with
the traditional Bun Run,
a parade, car show and
an arts and craft show.
AUG. 7, 1999
More than 3,000 people crowded downtown
Seymour.
Charles Rottier, Seymour, won the Ketchup
Slide with a 179 feet, 9
inches.
Michelle Shelly of Goshen, Ind. won the women’s competition with a
slide of 69 feet, 4 inches.
Shelly and her family
were passing through
the area on vacation,
saw the festival signs
and just couldn’t help
donning a swim suit and
sliding through ketchup.

The first Burger Fest on Aug. 5,
1989 had its beginnings a year earlier
when 65 people gathered for a brainstorming session.
Vivian Treml pointed out the fact
that Charlie Nagreen had fried the
first hamburger at the Seymour Fair
in 1885.
That formed the basis of Seymour’s
often proven claim that Seymour is
the Home of the Hamburger.
That meeting led to three goals:
cook a world-record size ‘hamburger,
hold an annual festival based on the
hamburger and establish a Hamburger Hall of Fame.
Once the Home of the Hamburger
set its goals, the group began the logistics of building the world’s largest
burger.
Joe Sauer had the idea of building a
covered grill so the huge burger would
cook evenly. Steve Mielke engineered
the grill, now a fixture at Nagel Park.
Seymour native, Carl Kuehne, then
owner of Green Bay Dressed Beef,
donated the 5,200 pounds of ground
beef for the feat. About 12,000 people
had a share of the world record burger.
People Magazine was on hand for
the event. Mayor Judith Schuette authenticated the burger by eating the
first portion.
The World’s Largest Hamburger
Parade boasted 212 entries. Other
events during the first Burger Fest included a costume contest, big wheel
races, the Hamburger Olympics (later
changed after a legal threat from the
World Olympics) which included the
Ketchup Slide, a bed race, and art
show.

Mayor Schuette presided over first
Burger Fest, reprises her role in 2010
Judy Schuette was
the mayor of Seymour
in 1989 when the first
Burger Fest was conceived and celebrated.
She is mayor again in
2010.
“I thought Burger
Fest was a good idea,”
Schuette said. “It has always been a great family-centered event for
Seymour.”
Schuette said she always likes the parade.
“When you watch it, you
know so many people
in it and that is what
makes it so enjoyable.”
The addition of a balloon rally has brought
more visitors to Seymour each August, including the mayor’s
house, which she said is
full of family every Burger Fest.
Schuette said Burger
Fest has been great for
Seymour.
“I admire all the people who put so much
time and work into it every year,” Schuette said.
