FUN WITH MATH
Fun with math? Can anyone really have fun with math? Of course! You just need to know where to look
to find all of the fun stuff! For instance, did you know that with a quick math puzzle you can make all of
your friends and family think that you can read their minds? Have you ever guessed a person’s birthday
by asking them to do math problems first? 10ticks.co.uk has a great trick for guessing how many siblings
you have! All of these puzzles are so much fun to do and will have you enjoying math in no time!
But wait! Number tricks are not the only way to have fun with math; we can also learn how to do
tangrams, work a sudoku puzzle (at factmonster.com) and even learn faster methods for multiplication at
coolmath4kids.com! Math touches every part of our lives and if you learn how to enjoy it, it will seem so much
easier to you!

“MAGICAL” MATH
Long ago, not everyone was very well educated. Scientists and mathematicians in this time were
sometimes thought to have magical powers because they knew things that common people did not know
or understand. You can appear to have knowledge like this with your own friends by demonstrating fun
math tricks. Try some of these on your friends and family!
Gray Elephants in Denmark
Do you think that it’s possible to make your friends think about gray elephants in Denmark just by
working a math puzzle? This will surprise most people and leave them wondering how you did it. First,
ask someone to pick a low number. Then, have them double that number. Now, add eight. Divide this
number in half. Subtract the original number. Now ask the person to assign a letter to what they have
left, with 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, 4=D, and so on.
Tell the person to pick a country that starts with that letter. Then have them look at the second letter in
the name of the country they chose, and pick an animal that begins with that letter. Have them think of
the color of that animal. Here’s the best part. Look at them and ask, “Are you thinking about a gray
elephant in Denmark?” They will think that you must be so smart to have figured out what they were
thinking.
There is another version of this trick. Ask a friend to write down his telephone number, with no dash.
Now, have him mix it up to form another number. Ask him to subtract the smaller number from the
larger number. Now, have him add all of the digits from the answer that he got together. If he is now left
with a two digit number, tell him to add those two numbers together to make a one digit number. Ask
him to subtract five from that number and to assign a letter to the number that he now has left (with 1=A,
2=B, 3=C, 4=D and so forth). Tell him to think of a country that begins with that letter. Now have your
friend think of a country that begins with that letter. Have him think of an animal that begins with the
second letter of the country’s name and to think of the color of that animal. He should now be thinking
about a gray elephant in Denmark!
What is Your Phone Number?
Only use your 7 digit phone number for this trick, do not use the area code. Take the first three digits of
your phone number and multiply by 80. Now add 1. Multiply this number by 250. Add the last 4 digits of
your phone number. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again. Subtract 250 and divide by 2.
You will be left with your phone number!
Guess The Birthday
This math trick is simple and will impress most people. Tell someone that you are going to guess her
birthday. Ask her to think of the month number that she was born in (January=1, February=2, etc…).
Now, have her multiply this by 5 and then add 6. Ask her to multiply this number by 4 and then add 9.
Have her multiply one last time, this time by 5. Ask her what the total is. In your head, subtract 165 and
you will have the month and the day she was born!

TANGRAMS
Tangrams are ancient Chinese puzzles made up of seven puzzle pieces. You use the puzzle pieces to try to
recreate patterns found on pattern cards, following several rules:
1. All of the pieces must be used.
2. All pieces must be laid flat, touching.
3. None of the pieces may overlap.
You’d think that a puzzle that only has seven pieces would be very simple to figure out, but some of them
are very tricky! Color your own tangram puzzles pieces and then go to these websites to test your ability
with the patterns:
http://tangrams.ca/puzzles/puzzles.htm
http://www.funorama.com/sheet1.html
http://www.funorama.com/sheet2.html
These next two can be played entirely online:

PATTERN BLOCKS
Pattern blocks are used to practice geometry and to learn about fractions. The blocks use six basic shapes:
square, triangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid and hexagon. You can use these shapes to make pictures,
following the patterns on the page, or you can come up with your own designs. Go to archytech.org to play
with some online pattern blocks. Also, look in the coloring pages section to color your own small set of pattern
blocks and use them to create your own beautiful designs!

SUDOKU
Sudoku (try this at jigsawdoku.com) is a logic puzzle that is made up of a 9 X 9 grid. Within the larger grid
are smaller sub grids, all 3 X 3. Look at this example:
The grid has several numbers (called “givens”) already filled in some of the boxes. Your goal is to fill in all
of the other numbers, with each row having only 1 of each number (1-9), each column having only 1 of
each number (1-9) and each sub grid having only 1 of each number (1-9). Look in the activity pages to
find your own sudoku puzzle or try one online at mypuzzle.org (thekidzpage.com even has some made up
of shapes and colors)!
www.TheHomeschoolMagazine.com
9
SUDOKU CHALLENGE
Complete the sudoku puzzle by putting 1 of each number (1-9) in each column, 1 of each
number (1-9) in each row, and 1 of each number (1-9) in each 3x3 box.

MULTIPLICATION
Multiplication can seem hard when you are first learning it. It really helps if you memorize the “times
tables” and can recall them quickly. It also helps to play games. At mathplayground.com you can practice
what you have memorized. Study these and then take the “Math Minute” test, located in the activity
pages. See how many multiplication problems you can complete in 60 seconds!

Sometimes, even after all of the memorizing, it is hard to remember the facts. That’s when I like to use
number tricks to help recall the information. Here are a few of my favorites:
1. When you are multiplying by 2, just remember to double the number you are multiplying by 2, and
you will have your answer. For example, 2x9 is the same as saying 9+9, and both of these equals
18.
2. When multiplying by 4, simply double the number twice. 4x8 is the same as 8+8=16+16=32. 4X8
equals 32!
www.TheHomeschoolMagazine.com
11
3. This trick for the 9s has always been my favorite! Hold both hands out in front of you, with your
fingers spread out. Now, let’s say that you want to multiply 9X4. Starting with the far left finger,
count four fingers and lower that fourth finger. You should now have 3 fingers to the left of the
lowered finger and 6 fingers to the right of the lowered finger. A 3 and a 6 make 36. 9x4=36! It
will work with 9x1 through 9x10, making this a very “handy” trick to keep in mind!

MONEY
All around the world people use money every day to buy the things they need. How much do you know
about the currency used around the world? Do you know how the U.S. dollar compares to other
currencies? Look at this chart to see; remember, when we say that a currency is worth a certain amount
on the dollar, we mean that the currency is worth that amount compared to the U.S. dollar at this time. It
changes frequently and may be different tomorrow! For example, if we are looking at the Mexican Peso
and see that it is worth 9 cents on the dollar, that means that for every peso you have, you can trade it for
9 cents in the U.S. Also, click on the links (to factmonster.com pages) to learn more about each of these

RECIPES
Crockpot Carne Guisada
3 pounds beef stew meat (or lean roast, cut into bite-sized pieces)
1 14.5-ounce can of diced tomatoes
1 14.5-ounce can of diced tomatoes and green chiles
3 cloves minced garlic
1 cup chopped onion
1 diced bell pepper
Place all of the ingredients above in your large crockpot.
In ¼ cup of water whisk:
3 tablespoons flour
½ teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon chili powder (or to taste)
Pour over ingredients in crockpot and simmer on low 8 - 10 hours or on high for 4 - 5 hours (or until meat
is tender).
Serve with cheese, tortillas, spanish rice, and pinto beans. Makes great tacos!
Chicken Spaghetti
4-5 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, boiled and
cut into bite-size pieces
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 bell pepper, chopped
14.5-ounce package of dry spaghetti noodles
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can tomato soup
2 14.5-ounce cans of diced tomatoes and
green chiles
1 1/2 pounds American cheese, cubed
1 small can black olives
salt, pepper, dried basil to taste
1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese (optional)
Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Sauté onion and bell pepper in olive oil until translucent.
In a large bowl or pan, combine chopped chicken, soups, spaghetti, tomatoes, and cheese with the onion
and bell pepper mixture.
Pour into a 13" x 9" baking pan, top with additional grated cheddar cheese, if desired. Bake at 350°F for
30 minutes or until bubbly.
