COLOUR OF THE YEAR
COLOURNEXT16
Is your red my red?
The average human eye identifies colour the same way, but
how we identify with colour opens up a whole new spectrum.
In these grey areas, as it were, we explore a world of colour
that is rich with individual perception.
The inherent diversity in our experience of colour only makes
the creation of it more interesting. Translating abstract
feelings into complex compounds of pigment, solvent, filler
and additives is both a precise science and an intuitive art.
The pursuit of the perfect shade of crimson sunset or dusk
grey is hard work. Take the history of our Colour of the Year for
instance, a tale of sojourns and espionage across the oceans,
all for that inimitable Madder Red. Centuries later, its appeal
is still as strong.
Colour reflects the mood of an era, a season, a nation, an
individual — it is a chronicler of our times. Layered with
symbolism across cultures, its evolving meaning is touched
by shifting socio- economic currents. In the infinite palette of
nature, there are still millions of shades we are yet to tap.
At Asian Paints, we seek to recreate those that resonate with
the pulse of the people. Working with influencers across
disciplines, from designers to sociologists, we distill societal
trends that reflect and react to the mood of our consumers.
With six decades of experience in perfecting colours, we bring
you Asian Paints ColourNext16. In the 13th edition of our
annual trend forecast for interiors, we rediscover colour and
the individual — that unique expression of life that has quietly
taken the spotlight this year.
Pioneering fashion editor, Diana Vreeland once said, “All my
life I have pursued the perfect red. I can never get painters to
mix it for me. It’s as if I’d said, ‘I want Rococo with a spot of
Gothic and a bit of Buddhist temple’—they have no idea what
I’m talking about.”
She should have talked to us.

Red. Truer, deeper, Madder Red. A colour that has travelled
the world from Central Asia to India, through the Levant to
the West. Greek dyers were brought to France to recreate
this revolutionary red, spies were sent to the Near East to
unearth the secret to it. A red to dye for, some would say.
Intense and individual, the colour couldn’t ask for a
more apt name, christened after the plant the pigment is
distilled from — madder, manjishtha or Rubia Tinctorum.

The individual has taken centerstage. There is a resurgence
of the I, and an awareness of its power to inspire the we.
Like a recoiled spring that holds within itself the energy to
power forward, yet remains unassuming to the outside world,
the individual rests in the confidence of this potential.
There is a fire within — not the raging, restless kind but one
that fuels new beginnings. It comes from an intensity of
passion, and the power of conviction. Ablaze like the core of
the earth, yet contained.
There is a madness to this method, early seekers said.
Twenty steps from root to red. Months turned into years, the
way slowly found. Hot on the trail of this elusive rose, many a
red has come and gone. But, the madder forever soldiers on.
COLOUR OF THE YEAR
Three centuries later, Madder Red remains an expression of
the indomitable spirit of the individual that unites the varied
currents we see in society today.

In a world that’s constantly asking what’s
next, a growing force is in search of the
original. Classic isn’t a characteristic of
age, but a mark of the ageless.
The world is celebrating the bold, the
edgy, the creative. The next big idea could
be anywhere, and the freedom of the
internet has made all of us both creators
and curators of contemporary culture.

Transcending cultural, geographical
and physical borders with the internet,
we are united by the power of a shared
passion. We are finding ourselves
through collective identities.
Growing up doesn’t mean settling down. The
contemporary urban Indian is unafraid to live
in the now, on a journey through experiences
that change the way they see the world.

In a world that is obsessed with innovation, some of us
have always sought the original. Today, it isn’t hard to
find more and more people driven by that unwavering
quest for the classic — where objects, experiences and
spaces awaken a deeper emotion. The reverberation
of a choir filling up the Notre Dame, the touch of pure
pashmina, the whirr of the 1960 Aston Martin; the joy
in each emanating from the power of its unadulterated
essence. Its price, unquestioned. Its value, priceless.

light-as-air laptop — and of course, in the spaces we
inhabit. While carefully curated, the homes, offices,
cafes and studios we love are unpretentious. Gond folk
art rubs shoulders with Rothko prints, reflecting a search
for the ideal, irrespective of the era or geography. The
kind of place where you can kick off your tan slippers,
sink into a chaise longue and discuss Brancusi under
the skylight. The soul in the lives we craft for ourselves,
rekindled. Where old is not necessarily gold, originality is.
REKINDLE
We aspire for the authentic, looking back to the past as
much as looking forward to the future for experiences
that are unaffected by trends and seasons. Design so
powerful, the idea becomes an archetype. Often we find
it in an era of the past, yet it is not the rejection of the
new that defines our choices, but the embracement of
the timeless. A choice we make with everything we use
— the beaten brass dinner plates, that iconic timepiece
for the wrist, the hand-sewn felt sleeve for that

FOR REKINDLE
The Rekindle space is forever, unchanged by
time yet gracefully moving with it. As old as it
is new, it speaks to you. There is comfort in the
familiar, a deep rooted connection to the origin
of every material, form and colour. Drawn from
the living world around us, natural dyes like
Indigo and Manjishtha find resonance in the
grain of seasoned wood, the taste of copper
and the touch of terracotta under your feet.
Refined without losing its innate spirit, they
rekindle the essence of who we are.

churned out. It is, in fact, quite the opposite. Unbound by
geographical, cultural and physical borders, through the
internet we find a resonance of different aspects of our
personality. It doesn’t matter how disparate they may be.
We are in constant motion, connecting with people across
the world with whom we may have little in common, but a
shared interest. We flock together in fluid groups and learn
from each other, finding strength in a collective identity.
No bird is of a single feather. And no feather, a single

FOR FLOCK
Unwritten rules bind us to each other;
we are leaders and followers all at once.
And, so it is with Flock. Brought together
by an idea in common, neutral midtones
search for harmony, and materials find an
echo in each other. Standing out is not as
important as standing together. You glide
from space to space; nothing screams
for your attention, but everything quietly
beckons it. Almost white with a hint of
purple or a drop of red, mild colours meet
dreamy surfaces like marble and iridescent
glass. Boundaries are blurred and stories
overlap, layered like a watercolour painting.
A true exploration of coming together.

hierarchy of communication. Anyone who wants
to tell a story, can. Whether it is in 140 characters
or in a photograph, a film or in spoken word, we
can reach out to the world like never before.
This is the era of the creative individual. That tattoo
doesn’t have to be covered under a collared shirt anymore.
You may not show up on time ever, but that’s no deal
breaker. The world is aligning to the creative, celebrating
the unique with all its eccentricity. And, the creative is

We are both witnessing and propelling the democratisation

audience. The only hoop to jump through is our own
conviction. Sometimes, not even that. The choice of
anonymity has liberated thousands of emerging artists,

writers, actors, dancers, hackers, coders and creators
who would have otherwise never put themselves
out there. Out there, where the curators of cool

There is no dearth of second chances. Who said first

What is your aim in life, they asked. We live in exciting
times, when exploring the farthest corners of the world
is a perfectly acceptable answer. Perhaps, with your
ukulele, finding a tune with the folk you meet on the
way. Maybe, as a seeker saluting the sun. Or a painter
of walls, leaving a mark in the countless graffiti strewn
rooms you call home. You could make a film about it,
or you could go right back to your nine-to-nine job
in the city and save up for your next adventure.
The contemporary urban Indian is breaking the mould.
(S)he is shaking off years of conditioning that equated
growing up with settling down. With more people leaving

of stars in the Thar, tracing stories of Kutch from an
embroidered shawl or tailing an Antarctic expedition
as the team gofer — so what, if they’re the boss at
home? And on the journey back, their bags are as light
as when they set out. Because, it is not souvenirs they
seek but the surprises that lurk on the road ahead.
They are explorers, journeying forth. They see the
world through a kaleidoscope of experiences, each one
intensely lived and deeply observed, moulding their
story. Life is a carousel of wonders, every turn unearths
a new facet. They wander with intent, in search of that
ephemeral moment of magic, sleeping under a blanket
Unattached to the past or the future, they live in the
now. Home is where they are, wherever they are, and
the most precious possessions, their experiences. Okay,
the camera with all those memories is important too.

home to find their feet, and the financial independence
that an open economy has enabled, this generation is
looking beyond the conventional definitions of success.
How much they earn isn’t as important as where
they have been. And, what they have experienced
is more important than what they have seen.

FORECAST FOR
THE EXPLORER
The Explorer sees the beauty of
impermanence. It draws from eclectic
experiences. Like a seasoned traveller
who is comfortable anywhere, the palette
is neutral with browns and greys, the
perfect background to the theatre of
life that unfolds. Joyfully unattached,
The Explorer chooses birch over teak,
aluminium over iron and wallpapers
that feed a whimsical need to move
on. Evolving spaces punctuated with
moments of surprise, like a journey with
a map less travelled.

COLOURNEXT16:
BEHIND THE COLOUR STORIES
Introduced in 2003, ColourNext, our annual colour
forecast, has become widely recognised as a powerful tool
for designers, architects and anyone working with colour
to refer to for the upcoming years’ freshest colours and a
springboard for design ideas.
India’s finest design minds, including architects,
sociologists and advertising professionals work side by
side to break down, analyse and draw conclusions from
changing consumer behaviour and how that impacts colour
and décor choices. Sifting through media, contemporary
design spaces and interviews with design thinkers, trend
forecasters, media professionals and influencers allows
CN16_LookBk_AfterProof.indd 107
a picture to emerge of evolving trends. This information
then informs a panel of select designers across India
who brainstorm over colour associations which are then
translated into a range of colour stories and themes
that reflect the moods of the year. A further distillation
by industry leaders and design experts chosen by the
Asian Paints colour marketing team produces even more
refinement – the final colour stories are born, distinct and
defining, an accurate picture of the times. These along with
emerging consumer segments and an expertly curated
spectrum of colours are then presented as the upcoming
year’s ColourNext.
